| I am doing some work on the side for a small company who has recently rid themselves of a "questionable" LAN admin. One thing that will be brought up to me when I meet with them is their licensing issues.
I am assuming the worst, that either the previous admin either installed pirated software or did not keep track of the paper licenses that comes with the boxed software. Other than actually having the paper "license agreement", what other ways can you tell what software you legally own?
I believe, for example, if you buy a computer from Dell that the license for Windows OS and any office suite installed on the machine is assumed. Would the person who purchased the machine have a paper license for this software, could they get documentation from Dell stating they own the software?
Are internet software vendors required to provide you with this information if they sell you the software? Are there any other tips or advice any of you could provide?
Thanks in advance. | |

| Dell normally have the licence stuck on the PC, it's usually on the side.
Large companies should have a database of the licenses sold and to whom, retial shops who sell to the public may not have.
Good Luck. |
