I have os win. 98se. A friend told me to go to speedguide.com. I did and download some programs to help make my computer run better. Now when I boot up I get a c:\> in a list of 3 when Im starting my computer. Im not sure what caused this to happen or how to resolve this?

Hmm... make your computer run better? Doesn't seem so at this point, but maybe something happened to the MSDOS.SYS file that is causing this to happen.

Just when, exactly, are you seeing this list of three C:\>? Does your computer continue to boot into Windows or just to the DOS prompt?

The programs you downloaded, I assume you installed them too. If you did, what were they?

Good point from jhknwspec , sounds like corrupted system files. Assuming you cant get into safe mode by hitting F8 at boot up. Try putting your start up disk into drive A (floppy), then reboot, you should get the option to boot with or without cd support, to start off ,select option 2, no cd support, soon you will get the A prompt (A> ), type this scandisk c: this should scan and repair any minor errors on hard disk. Failing this, do the above again but this time instead of scandisk c: put this
"type config.sys" without the qoutes, should give you a line on screen containing /windows/programs/ so on, if not you may have a problem with the config.sys file. When I have these problems with my system, I just do a clean install of win98. I format the hard drive and do a complete re install. You need all your drivers for your mobo, video, modem etc.
