Weird networking problem

| I have a problem with a computer in our school's network. It won't renew it's ip address through DHCP. It says it can't find the DHCP server. I tried to put a static one in with the correct settings and it still wouldn't work. I looked at the switch and there was no light on so I hooked a known working computer into the port and it worked fine. When I plugged the other machine backin to the port it would flash connected and network cable unplugged in the system tray. It worked and was able to get an ip address from DHCP.
I logged off the administrator account and logged in as a the startup user. When it finally loaded it said the network cable was unplugged. We are using Win 2k. Does anyone have any ideas? | |

| Is your NIC good? | |

| That was my next option. I was just looking for another opinion. From what I have heard around here, yours is a good one. | |

| Try switching it out with a known good one to see if that is the problem. | |

| If that is your real pic you are super fly....Oh wait now I sound like all the other 12 year olds on here (hahahaha). Truthfully thank you for the idea, that's kind of what I thought also. | |

| Yeah, that's my real pic. Let me know if this idea helped. You might want to try cross-poositng in the Net+ or A+ forums, as the General Forum doesn't seem to have much in the way of practical advice. | |

| It's probably the NIC. One thing to check: go to NIC's properties (either in Device Manager or Network Connections properties) and make sure the settings agree with those for the switch. (ie, if the NIC is staticly set to 10Mbps, it could have problems talking to a 100Mbps switch. Compare the problem computer with the known good computer and make sure the settings match. |
