Even though this is the beginning of September Christmas will be here before we know it! The question is: are we ready for it?

There was no room in the inn so I sat in my hideous room waiting for the gold, frankincense & myrrh to show up.
It never did.
No wise people.
I saw the Star of Bethlehem itself.
It was a colossal Space explosion.
Reenacting imaginatively the Holy Virgin was funny.
They're rare.
I thought that the hay and the animals were particularly scummy.
But hey, what can you say?
.. No room at the inn.
As usual we shall forget to give Joseph even the merest mention.
Why?
The sheep farmers should all emigrate to the outback of Australia.
I couldn't give a XXXX for 'em!

Hi Guys,

I run a business on a Sunday market (and if it paid a bit more it'd be great, I'd just work one day a week!) and most of the traders have got their Christmas stock in their storage/lock-ups by now.

No one's actually put any out as of yesterday but one or two guys say that customers have asked about external lights, etc so they'll be putting gear out on display from next week onwards.

Regards
Peter

You would work one day a week when you have the fantastic opportunity of working four? Do you sell computers on your stall? Because if you don't I am just wondering what the heck some market stall produce person from Scunthorpe is doing on an I.T. website!

Hi Helen,

I sell market stalls, plus sheets, clips, tables, etc, to other traders.

Wouldn't you work just one day a week if it brought in enough cash?

I'm here as a Network Engineer which is what I currently do five days a week.

Under the present unemployment scheme in the U.K. it is pretty much pointless working one day a week because when you declare it you will find that the vast majority by far of what you earn will simply be deducted out of your job seeking benefits. The other option is not to declare it at the employment bureau which can simply make you ineligible for benefit.

*Wouldn't you work just one day a week if it brought in enough cash?*

No.

Hi Helen,

I've found over the years that whenever I'm out of work I'm not usually eligible for anything much from the government.

So some years ago I started running part-time businesses while I worked full-time so that I'd have something to fall back on when I was laid off next time.

If I'm selling the right gear on a market I can make more in a couple of days than I'll get off the government and it still leaves me time to look for another job.

It is then the case of *your total savings* and your *current disposable income*
I think what you do is correct.
However, the real problem as I see it is the governmental insistence that people should be in relative poverty whilst they seek work.
For many people this is a highly insulting state of affairs and far from acting as an initiative to work simply promotes the contrary ...
I think you'll find that the pittance that they pay out coupled with the stringent laws regarding work and pay whilst unemployed has more of the cited effect rather than anything conducive to *the tax relieved citizen*
Since however we deal mostly with complete fools in government who make up such legislisation then this is hardly surprising!
