As far as I can tell there are four was that xp can use the network.

1)IP LEVEL SHARED RESOURCES MAP DRIVES
2)Domain rights,no certs
3)domain rights w/certs
4)domain w/o full right

can anyone tell me the pro's and cons

What I was wondering and trying to find are what are some of Advantages and disadvantages of joining a domain with an xp pc to a win2000 server

I think I fig most of it

If you are running Exchage server do the clients need to be on a domain or can they be on a workgroup

Better to have clients on DOMAIN and assigned to OU. Permissions can then be set to OU (which will affect clients) and easier to administer. Policy is then set at Domain level, applied at Organizational level instead of at each client machine.
