How important is it to be able to subnet in your head? I am retarded and just can't seem to do it fast enough. It is like doing multiplication of large numbers in my head, it takes alot less time if I can write it down. I dunno I been told that I should be able to subnet in my head but I just can't seem to do it because I am retarded. I can do it fine if I have a peice of paper to write down various numbers on but I tend to forget the answers to the first steps once I get to the last step.

Guess I am stupid and retarded like mom always said. Oh well guess I will go out and eat some more worms since I am such a moron like everyone thinks because I can not subnet in my head like Mr.I AM SO MUCH SMARTER THEN YOU.

In my community we have a program for developmentally impaired adults in which we teach them to subnet in their heads. It is so rewarding to see people exceed their expectations.

It is not at all critical to be able to subnet in your head. Many engineers have a software program that does it for them. They type in the network ID and the number of subnets they need (or number of hosts they need on each subnet) and it spits out the subnets and subnet mask for them.

I can subnet in my head, but I've been called a geek more than I have been given complements for it.

Anyway, you will NEVER be in a production environment where you have to be able to subnet in your head. Production environments shouldn't have anything implemented on the fly.

The next time some nerd tells you they can subnet in their head, tell them you have more important things to do than be a math nerd.

You could always try Freak's guide to subnetting. You can find it here.

I know how to subnet fine, does it show tricks for doing it in your head? I can figure it out on paper fine. In fact I recently bought network visualizer(they will soon have the CCNP moduals for it) from routersim.com and I designed a fairly complex subnetted network. Had about 25 different devices in it, but of course I had to write it all down on paper when I was doing it. I dunno maybe some day.

The only reason you need to be able to subnet in your head is if you are taking the CCNA exam as the time limit is quite tight. But you dont really need to know how to do it in the work enviroment.

However you might want to try it at a night club to impress the girls.

Well I took the CCNA and passed it without needing to be able to do it in my head. How are the CCNP exams?

Boring,
Id rather spend my time Scuba diving.

My company makes me take them, pays for the books, exams. Though at least they let me study at work. They have to keep their 'gold rating' with Cisco ( so many employees with Cisco certs ).

The only real fun is when the whole network goes down and its just you and the routers.

Someday if I ever obtain my CCIE, which is very doubtful because I am retarded. But if by some grace of God(or the devil if I get a chance to sell my soul) I become a CCIE. I am going to get a tattoo on my arm that says CCIE then my CCIE number inside a router diagram symbol. I think the chicks will dig that. They would be all over me. I just hope I can get one of those sticker kind because the real kind would hurt to much.

If you get your CCIE, you are certain to become a chick magnet.

still, you could always try to impress them by flashing the tattoo of the 7600 series router on your backside.

Though for some strange reason, Fat Chicks prefer guys with Comptia cert tatoos. Must be low self esteem I guess.

I always find holding onto the net after you've caught a sub in it quite difficult, you may want to enlist the help of some your Air force buddies.

Oppps me bad, forgot you still haven't got in yet have you

As did I,

But in the order of things they are entry level exams. And though worthy exams, they are not as valuable as others in obtaining gainfull employment.

No matter how hard you work, you can always count on somebody to tell you its not good enough. But I do know what you mean about comptia, Some people just totally devalue my certification by purchasing the test and memorizing but dont even know the basics.
