Autodetect serial console properties?

| I just got a few access points off of eBay, and am having some trouble consoling in. Apparently, the default settings have been changed from the factory defaults. I tried a few of the more common settings combinations, which were a no go as well...all I get is garbage characters on the screen. I had a few of the same model access points already, and have not had any trouble consoling in with the default settings in the past.
Do any of you know if there's a way to autodetect the settings of a serial port, or am I stuck with trial-and-error? | |

| Are you talking about wireless access points?
I installed one recently and three wireless LAN cards into PCs. The access point I used had a recessed push button switch, which if you held it in with a paper clip and attached the power cord at the same time, would reset the access point to its factory default settings. After that, the AP and the PC cards got their IP addresses by DHCP from an attached router. What make are they?

| Unfortunately, there's no factory reset button. These are Arlan 630-900 900MHz wireless access points. Aironet sold these things before Cisco bought them, and they were discontinued soon after. | |

| By combinations do you mean speed only? Maybe it is not a speed problem, maybe they are running 7 data bits plus even or odd parity. e.g. old time internet or mainframe style. | |

| That's why I'm wondering if there's an automated way to do this. Between the bit rate, flow control, parity, stop bits and bits/byte there are a ton of combinations to try. | |

| I'm looking for a program to do this as well.
I keep starting to write one then get dragged away to to something else.
Have tried a search on the internet but have not found what I am looking for. |
