Hackers in my machine? How dare they...

| On my PC, if I do a netstat -a, I see TCP and UDP ports on my machine connected to strange IP addesses. My Internet Explorer window is not up, Nothing that is running in the background should (hah hah) be accessing the Internet, so theoretically, there should be no ports connected to any other Internet Hosts. Right??? If I go in and look, grab the IP address, and NeoTrace it, it comes back with no info, like it is not a company, but a private individual. Are my assumptions correct, or am I just giving myself the heebie-jeebies for nothing? | |

| Are you running any type of firewall? I would close shut down all ports but 80 & 443 and then all the extra activity should stop. Then I would run a scan for trojans. | |

| I am running Zone Alarm... and as far as I know, there isn't an option to block specific ports. Can anyone recommend a decent hardware firewall? Checkpoint, maybe??? | |

Checkpoint is software and very expensive - it's really for businesses. Just get a NAT router...Netgear, D-Link, etc. | |

| I just filtered out all ports except HTTP and HTTPS, and now all activity has ceased. I will now scan for Trojans, thanks! | |

If you have been hacked you should reinstall. You never know what utilities may have been replaced with lookalikes. |
