| Ok, yesterday, I received a message in my work e-mail thanking me for signing up to some adult website, and that I would be receiving more e-mails in the future. Well, today, I received about 100 porn e-mails in my work e-mail box. Now I'm pissed. On this e-mail was the IP address of the person that sent the original request. It is a Comcast address, and I have traced it down to a city and state (using NeoTrace). I called Comcast, asking them to take care of their customer that was maliciously using my e-mail address to sign up for these things. they told me that I'd have to call the Police to do anything, and they probably wouldn't be able to help at all anyways.
My question is, are there any tools out there to determine either the name, or address that an IP adddress is registered to? I think I may know who it is, and I'd love to be able to come back and tell them that I figured out it was them. I'm just really curious to find out. Any help would be appreciated!

| Usually, ISPs have an e-mail address like, abuse@abc-isp.com to which they invite you to send the offending e-mail. From that e-mail header they should be able to determine the sender, based on their AAA server records. After that, they should delete that account. It might not be possible for the ISP to determine the name address and telephone number, if the ISP provides free e-mail services. This is a common situation exploited by spammers. Other than that, I suppose that only leaves the FBI with their sophisticated tracking equipment.

| Once you're on one list, it's safe to say you'll be getting spammed at that address for life.
Not to be negative, however that's my experience.

| Welcome to the life of porn and email. Scratch the email address and get a new one. | |

That's usually the best solution. I usually keep several emails . . . one for public boards and registering for online services, which I never check and then a private one that I only give out to those who need it.

| Does your work mail system have a spam filter? Presumably not. Perhaps you should suggest it to them? | |

| If you delete the email account for about a week the spammers should take it off of their list because of the bounce backs they get. This has been my experience, and that of some customers of mine. | |

| It might be the changing of the seasons you know. It can affect a man's hormone balance... | |

| Thanks for all the replies-
I already tried going through Comcast, their abuse@somcast.com will not work for me because the e-mails are not coming through Comcast, just the original e-mail signing me up.
My company does have a spam filter, we just switched over to Lotus Notes, and now we have the technology. I guess I'll just have to spend my days sifting through porongraphic mail, creating new and more effective filters. Hey wait, I can get paid for that? Maybe this wasn't such a bad thing after all!!!!!

| Have you tried to up the IP of the sender from the header and reporting it to that person ISP? | |

99.9% that's spoofed. Don't bother. You'd have to be a moron to show you're real IP.

| Yeah, I tried that route and sent an e-mail in, but I'll have to wait and see. But, you're probably right, nothing will probably come of it. |
