Author Using DHCP To Share Internet Access

Hi,

I want to be able to run my Windows XP computer as a DHCP server, and want my client computers (just one pc right now, connected via NIC in main system, cross over cabling) to have internet access through the DHCP server.

I plan on getting a router sooner or later so I can connect more PC's to my main system.

The client computers will be running Win98, what would be the easiest way to accomplish this?

The main reason I want to do this is so that I dont have to install any other software on my client machines, I can just Install Windows and connect to the Internet using DHCP.

Thanks.

I was just browsing some sites, and it says that I need WinNT Server versions (WinNT/2K/XP Server/Advanced), which means I cant use WindowsXP Pro as a DHCP server, correct?

Thanks.

correct, you need to use ICS - Internet Connection Sharing. this allows other PC's on your network to access the internet from one PC, but that PC has to be on at the time. It provides IP addresses automatically like DHCP.

Yeah but with ICS you still have to install ICS software on the client machines dont you?

Why not just buy a cable/dsl router? Save electric.
