If you know how, I'd say building your own is always cheaper then buying. You can build a decent entry level server for less then you buy a gateway workstation that is about 1/10 as good. Also it's easier to fix your own creation and usually a lot cheaper.

thanks for the link.

i always prefer to build my own. main reason... i know exactly what's in the box. and, i can also upgrade one or more parts without having to deal with proprietary stuff.

new box to be(just bought the components):

P4 2.4 w/ 500 mhz fsb, SOYO dargon lite MOBO, 256Meg PC2700 DDR, 4X AGP 64mg Nvidia, 350 watt power supply. The rest is what i still have that works good, looking for new HDD.

Yeah, build your own always cheaper.

However you must know what all your products and components.

I'm building one now too:

Dual processor 1.0 Athlon, Asus A7M266-D Motherboard, 266 FSB, 500W Power.

thats all I have so far besides the Mod case. It's fun. Makes me feel like a Tech.

yep. you can save a bit of cash, but you can also end up using crappy components and having a crap system.
