| Hello everyone and Happy New Year.
I need a little help from my friends...
I have a Compaq 7360 Computer with Windows 98SE. It's a 10.something gig hard drive. What I am wanting to do for the first part of the New Year is to clean this thing up and out. right now it's partitioned into two drives, c: and d:/ which is systemsav and has alot of compaq stuff in it, like
Compaq drivers,some file labeled
CPQS,that has some "I have no idea what' kind of stuff, tools, patches, etc, and another file name DATA,
Confiq,
something called Cto.
I have no idea what this stuff is, whether it's important or not, am I using it or do I need it. But what I would like to do, if possible is to reformat the whole thing, and just clean it up. Do you think all this Compaq stuff is necessary.
And the big question, How should I go about accomplishing this. Any help or information will be appreciated.
Thanks | |

| Goto Compaq and get all the necessary drivers for your machine and put them either on floppy or CD. Then format and reinstall your drivers that you have. | |
|
| 1)backup all your file
2)you can use recovery disk - if avaiable
3)repartition the HD
4)install Window system
Simple and Easy | |

| as far as i know windows will warn you if you attempt to delete the wrong stuff, i know i have just built a pc and diched some stuff off the hdd, to save space delete some fonts you do not need 150 types of font also enable write behind cashing on 98 this go to task manager then performance tick write behid caching good luck | |

| If you are already using winXP then you might not need any new drivers.. coz xp is PnP. But it is safer to grab the specific drivers that you might need. Download them. If yoiu have a cd writter / ZIP drive then burn em. Alternatively make sure you get the driver for atleast modem you use. That way you can download othr drivers once you are online.
REFORMATTING HOW::
1)After making sure that you dont need any data on the hardrive(you dont need to uninstall), restart your PC.
2)Put the startup disk for win98 in the FDD.
3)Start with CD-Rom support
4)once DOS is loaded, type "format C:" assuming C: is your primary HD. IF you have more drives then you can reformat them using the same command.
5)After formattin, if you want to partition then type "fdisk".
6)Make a Primary , then extended dos. You can make further logical drives from there.
7)After you are satisfied with formatting and partitioning, its time to install the OS.
8) You can install Linux, Win or what eve you want.
9)For Win98, insert the Cd and type "setup", the installation wizard will take over from there. ---NOTE-- im not sure how to install XP from a clean boot, I have to install 98 and then install XP from there. I dunnno..i thouht XP is a bootable cd but yea.. any one!!
10)if you are gonna be running XP, i recommend you use NTFS file format.
Hope this helps!!

| thanks for the info
if I have hard disk partitioned into two drives: c and d I will have to format them seperately right?

| First you should format the drive, then repatition it after. Make sure you go to Compaq website and download all the drivers you need. You should be able to get them just by typing in the make and model number. That should bring up all the drivers you'll need. At least it used to | |

| Imran4sin and goalie13,
Why are you suggesting formatting BEFORE using fdisk? I've always done it the other way around.

| Yeah, you should use FDISK. I just didn't want to get too deep into setting up a HDD. What I meant was after you FDISKed and formatted the drive, then re-partition it. Not just format the drives C:, and D:. Sorry. | |

Yup, you will have to format them seperately,
format c: then format d:
You can name them after that if you wish.

Well, in the end yoiu will have to format it.. darn it..so yea Sorry. ;-) |
