Author WTF is wrong with these people??

WTF is it about this job market and about being 'overqualified' for a position?!? I can't seem to find work anywhere because either I'm not good enough for a position or just too good. You would think that having a broad work experience would make you more eligible for a job but apparently thats not the case. I just got back from a staffing agency that one of my friends used to get his decent paying job. As soon as they looked over my resume they told me I am just too overqualified and they have nothing that would suit my needs at this time. I told them I will take whatever the hell they have available because I really could use the money. The irony of it is my friend that got the job through this company is like in the bottom of the barrel with his experience and qualifications and they hired him immediately. When I'm over here struggling just to make ends meet and they tell me to XXXX off. Even if I were to tone down my resume to make myself look like a dumbass they still probably not take me for whatever reason.

I just need something to hold me down for a while because I got a wife to support in a few months thats coming in from overseas. Not to mention I got a shitload of bills to pay and my pops is gonna start charging me rent soon. I just turned 20 and I feel like I got the weight of the world on my shoulders.

The broad work experience of a "just turned 20" year old? You failed to list the certs. that make you over qualified. Seems your staffing agency has a very narrow scope (all the way from not good enough to overqualfied). Do all the agencies tell you this?

Not trying to be rude, seriously.

Tweaker, is it possible that your frustration is coming across in interviews? Only you could tell for sure, but if so, it would be a turn off to prospective employers.

Also, I, too, have to wonder how broad your experience is at 20. Perhaps you've been doing the PC work since your teens, but there is also something to be said of experience handling yourself in the business world. Your youth could pose a challenge in which you will have to come across "more mature than your years" in order to get a job.

Well said darthw! Anyone can learn to tinker with a PC or tweak network settings. What other skills can you bring to the table?

At 20, his technical skill can be good... I think it can be his presentation skill as being able to demostrate his maturity. However, his friend did get a job... so... wonder how old is his friend!?

dude,
I've run into this problem and it suck a whole helluva lot (I'm 23 and have been turned down for at least 3 jobs for being "overqualified") what I did was act like an idiot with training on a few interviews and I finally got a job. don't dumb yourself down too much (keep your resume as it in otherwords) but on an interview anything they ask you that you think you shouldn't know or you don't think they wan't you to know play dumb (best way is to say "I don't know but if you give me 30 minutes or so I can find out") other than that I can only say you have to walk in like you don't really need the job. If they see you're desperate they won't hire you (nobody hires out of pity)

good luck
