Hi all,

I'm wondering if you guys can give me a bit of advice. There's 2 Isp's that I connect to at the moment, 'UTV' & 'Indigo' over isdn. Now with Indigo, I get much better pings (to a gameserver in london), and I was wondering if you guys could give a bit of advice as to where and what UTV can do to make their pings much lower. If yas will have a look at these ping and tracert results from my PC:

You can see that I have in BOLD, some of the tracert from UTV. I think this is where all the high pings/latency is coming from mainly. Could this be down to some slow hardware routers in their network? Their currently using Cisco. I currently have the opertunity to communicate directly with some techy ppl in the Utv isp, so I'd much prefare to stay with them, but I do play a lot of online games....

any advice would be welcome on how to troubleshoot these high pings

blimey! i am currently using btinternet and was thinking of switching to utvip service. i might ping and tracert those sites to see what my current isp delivers.

just ran the same tests from btinternet and got figures twice the size of utvinternet's. could be the time of day though. internet seems to be running in sloth-mode tonight.

I'm not really surprised the service from Indigo is better.

Take at look at the hops for Indigo:

Hop 1 to hop 2 takes you straight onto the Eircomm network and then two more hops until you reach telehouse in London and onto the barrysworld broadband server

Take at look at the hops for UTV:

It is not uyntil hop 8 that you reach Telehouse in London and in between that is a pile of routers of unknown destination. I would venture to suggest that Hop 4 is in Belgium. It might be worth checking on the IANA web site to see where the other routers are located.

The upshot of it all is that Indigo use a superb network in Eircomm, whereas UTV seem to go around the houses.

belgium ???? ah man

yeah the indigo route is perfect, direct line to the destination, but if you look at the tracert from utv, you can see that it takes 100ms just to get out of the utv network ? Am i reading it right when i say that?

I haven't had the chance to do this kind of ISP route tracing since I worked for BT on ADSL support.

I went to the web site www.ripe.net and found out the owners of the IP addresses in your trace - well, it's a quiet night shift and this was fun! Apart from the run-around route that UTV takes - by the way hop 4 is in Belfast, not Belgium - pay particular attention to the description under hop 6 on the UTV route. No wonder you have long PING responses.

Just in case the results listed below are not to clear due to formatting problems, I have attached a .txt file.

Have fun!

Yeah, its funny they should name it area51 !! lol ... the packets are prolly been abducted !!!!

OK,so

first 4 hops -- belfast, dublin-- UTV, Nevadatele
5th-8th hops-- leeds--Energis UK
9th hop, london
10th hop, Bracknell, Berkshire (bw)
11th hop, bw game server

Most of the time is lost in the first 4 hops, just getting out of the Utv main network. If you have any tips that I could pass onto the Utv guys, I would... I dont have an idea of what to say? maybe new routers will do the trick, new dyanmic/static routes?

Btw, that ripe site is excellent for looking up IP records, thx for telling me bout it

Ando

I don't know that you could have any influence over UTV's choice of paths to the 'Internet'.

It seems to me that Indigo has a 'fat-pipe' possibly a 34M trunk,or bigger running ATM directly into the Eircomm network. This would cost them heavily in annual rental, but worth it in the customer service rental returns they get. Whereas, it is possible UTV has gone through more 'cost-efficient' Telcos and ISPs, and probably at a lower bandwidth rate.

Either way, both UTV and Indigo will have made corporate decisions to go the way they have.

Cheers
