| I was just thinking about something that may or may not be a good idea. How about creating a forum called "Off topic" or the like? Seems like 60-70% of the posts in the General forum don't really apply to the topic at all. No offense to anybody as I do it too. I agree that fun should be had here, but I believe having another forum would be more appropriate for some of the posts. It would definately sort the, for lack of a better word, clutter from the more important on topic posts. I mean do the threads "Survivor", no offense Webmaster, and "Whats everybodys first name?" fit into the description "General discussion about anything and everything related to Information Technology and certifications"?
Just a thought. | |

| Slinky, I believe that is why the General Discussion forum was created. So people could discuss "Anything in General" | |
| NetChild1985 2002-09-21, 12:59 am |
| Sounds like a good idea for me, but the Webmaster takes the decisions and I think that he will not agree with this, because currently there is a "General Discussion". | |
| Slinky 2002-09-21, 1:21 am |
| I understand perfectly that this forum is "General Discussion". I brought this up because if you read under it on the forums home page it says
"General discussion about anything and everything related to Information Technology and certifications."
All I was saying is that threads like this definately do not fit under that description. Once again no offense to those posters, just trying to make a point. I could go on an on with these kinds of posts, but they are just mere examples.
http://www.examnotes.net/forums/sho...?threadid=61717
http://www.examnotes.net/forums/sho...?threadid=37677
http://www.examnotes.net/forums/sho...?threadid=59779
http://www.examnotes.net/forums/sho...?threadid=61715
And there are threads in other forums that definately don't apply to the topic. Like this one
http://www.examnotes.net/forums/sho...?threadid=59708
You might say that it would be more apporopriate here, but is it really?
I feel that there are 3 simple solutions to this. Webmaster can change the description of the forum, add a new one or none of the above and just leave it the way it is. Any way its no skin off my back, just trying to make it more user friendly.
Ultimately this is up to the Webmaster, obviously, so I guess what I'm asking for is your opinion. You're not going to hurt my feelings any way.

| A better idea: A chatroom! I have brought this up a few times in the past. | |
| Slinky 2002-09-21, 1:54 am |
| Another great idea. | |
| TW2001 2002-09-21, 4:42 am |
| Who will head up this "misguided thread" police? no wait dont tell me AMDWizard!
Would you feel better if it was...
"General discussion about anything and everything related to Information Technology ,certifications and anything that pops into your head"
Now this is just my opinion and reflects nothing on anyone elses views or opinions (or General discussions about anything and everything related to Information Technology and certifications)
Chat room would be cool though. Anyone ever been on Grex..something like that would be fun.
| thecomeons 2002-09-21, 4:51 am |
| i think a chatroom has been proposed before, but i cannot remember why the decision was made against it. perhaps it was to do with people wanting info and only being able to chat to people in their own timezone, ie when an australian or new zealander is having trouble in the afternoon or evening, the only people they can talk to are people as far west as the europeans who would be just getting out of bed as the americans would be in theirs.
most of the posts in the general forum do fit the description, if anything it can contain threads meant for mcse, salaries, a+ forums, etc.
| TekGal 2002-09-21, 5:10 am |
| Another BB forum I belong to calls their "General" forum "Random Discussion". And it is for any topic - getting to know other users, etc. | |
| enforcer 2002-09-21, 8:53 am |
| Mary was sat in front of her screen, trying to digest Slinky's suggestion of a seperate off topic forum or a general chat forum, she wasn't too keen on the idea, as she had made so many friends with the current set up and thought any change would break up many friendships. The one which concearned her most was the suggestion of a chat room, as it would make it difficult to keep upto dat with her aussie friends, and she especially liked the warped sense of humour comming from over the pond. NO she said if anything just adjust the title to General Discussion Forum. With this she reached for the lippy and . . . . | |

Interesting idea, but some of the active members here are in different time zones (like me). Consider this!

Now Now Netchild I have told you time and time again "THERE IS NO SLEEPING IN CYBERSPACE" do you want to stand in the back of the chatroom like yesterday?

Yep, Grex and M-Net are a blast!
| Boulware5 2002-09-21, 11:31 am |
| Timezones dont matter in chat rooms. I'm sure there would always be at least a few of us in there at various times during the morning, night and day. | |

Yesterday? What are you talking about? Did I miss something? Explain me please....

| Let's have an Encypted Forum. Force the members to hack the messages if possible. Purposely use a weak algorithm. | |

You don't remember standing in the back of the classroom yesterday, are you sure? Which parallel universe did you wake up in today? A case of Vuja De maybe (the feeling that you have never done this before).
It was simply some reverse logic humor like Startreks temporal mechanics. Some Americans are notorious for this. There is no time in cyberspace therefore how can there be a yesterday or for that matter a tomorrow. GMT+-X hours.
Does anyone really know what time it is... does anyone really care, I mean about time. (note to self save that last sentence for possible song words it has possibilities with a little reworking)
| NetChild1985 2002-09-24, 12:06 am |
| Now I understand what you mentioned. Sorry, English is not my native language and in some cases like this I can't understand the sense beyond the text. | |
| Johnny5Alive 2002-09-24, 6:15 am |
| I agree... This 'General Discussion' forum is rubbish. I used to come here because it USED to be 'General Discussion about IT topics' - a place where you could discuss something IT that couldn't fit another category. It has gotten worse with non-IT postings. Now, I hardly come to this forum because its General chit chat and full of people interested only in getting high post numbers . The moderator of this forum should clamp down on it and Webmaster, maybe start a new forum FOR just chat chit, and still leave a pplace for IT matters. Then everyone's happy. | |

| I think the webmaster is ignoring this issue. | |
| MistyRing 2002-09-24, 12:50 pm |
| What's the issue? People start to make friends on this forum and friends talk about all sorts of stuff. It's called getting to know each other. Who wants to talk about IT all the time? How dull.
Anyway the non-IT threads are pretty easy to spot. If you don't like them, don't read them.
| ruscorp 2002-09-24, 12:54 pm |
| A general discussion is just as the name implys; a general discussion. There has to be a place where members can talk about something other then the IT world. Everyone needs a break now and then. | |
| Slinky 2002-09-24, 1:01 pm |
| You're missing the whole point. I never did say that people shouldn't talk about all sorts of stuff or get to know one another. All I was saying is that there could be a more appropriate forum for this type of "dialogue". Taking your idea on the issue why don't you post irrelevant posts in other forums, like A+, N+, etc? Is it because they don't fit there and the 'General Discussion' seems more appropriate? But ask yourself, reading the description, is it really? I think not.
You're drawing conclusions and putting words in my mouth. I never did say that I didn't like the posts. So do me a favor and quit making assumptions.

You guys are killing me. Read the dang description of the forum. You too will find that most posts don't fit into that description. How many times are people going to say "Its a "General Discussion and thats what its there for"?

| I think there should also be a forum just for discussion of potatos. Everyone like potatos in some way. They have so many wonderfull uses. Tater Tots, Baked, Scalloped, Fried with a frenchman, Hasbrowns, and many more. Therefore I think a potato forum is in order. And as for the general discussion forum problem, if we have a potato board then everyone will be posting there and not here which in turn would solve any problems. Wow, some times I wonder how I became so brillant. All those year I spent my time sniffing paint must have paid off. | |
