Just ludicrous!

Microsoft is looking for a few good Xbox hackers. The company recently
posted a notice seeking an engineer who will be in charge of "...
collecting, evaluating and conducting analysis of modification chips" as
part of security research on Xbox hardware and software. The lucky person
will then help design hardware detection code fragments to embed in future
Xboxes. Hmmmm, sounds like an anti-hack chip to me. The notice winds up with
the fact that preference will be given to those with gaming hacking
knowledge. The job announcement comes as Xbox takes a seemingly heightened
stance against the mod chips which allow people to play copied, imported,
and homemade games on the Xbox.

My conclusion:

Ok XBox still falls a lil way short behind PS2 sales. Thus if only MS could foresee what a potentially huge market the third party add on really is!

Surly it would be in MS best interests to encourage after market goodies?

This would then leave the door wide open, hence some bright innovative entrepreneur would and could build some device that would greatly enhance the product.

Maybe the add on would sell in the 100's of thousands, thus MS could also collect a licensing fee for each and every one sold.

The final outcome will not only benefit the consumer, it will help MS recoup money lost on the hardware as well as bring more revenue in via a larger software user base!

Microsoft may well think they have all the mice & hold the dice, not strictly true because there will always be a better mouse trap!

Idiots!

are you implying, that in the uk certainly, sales of playstation and dvd machines was helped by the fact that they could be modified to play imported (often cheaper or available earlier to eager fans) and counterfeit discs?

...I guess my point being the XBox opens up a whole new can of worms if you like, the reason for this is quite simply because it's based on PC architecture.

The expansion possibilities are endless, one just has to look around and see how many goodies are available for the PC platform alone.

I feel MS are just a little to aggressive and greedy for their own good at times!

Even with the simple things, the XBox OS System is a glorified W-2000 affair, it would of been easy to run DVD's straight out of the box.

No MS had to remove vital code and DLL files thus make you pay extra for quite simply nothing but a simple remote control for DVD playback.

i thought it could play dvd movies. guess i never read into it deeply enough.

i had a fried who got some-game-system-or-other to play games and surf the internet. he was particularly interested in booking cheap flights from easyjet. but his games system didn't come with a modern enough web browser and it couldn't handle the java. he ended up selling it after a few months. LOL.
