Author DNS Error adding a Secondary DC to AD

I'm trying to add a domain controller to my active directory network and I'm getting a DNS error.

"Cannot contact DNS server..."

I found this by trying to configure this server as a domain controller while installing Active Directory. When it asks for the DNS server at the end, I hit "browse" found my dns server servername.domain.com and selected that. It said it could not contact it.

There is network connectivity and everything. Is there anything I'm missing here. Installing my original Domain Controller was way easier than this.

I tried to add the 2nd DC to the domain and then realized why that wouldn't work, since it couldn't contact the DNS server.

I read some instructions in the help saying to go to DNS, select the server and then go to Action -> New but that New is grayed on my server. I can't select that to configure it.

I have both DNS client and server services running.

Does anybody have any advice?

to put the IP address of your dns server in the IP config for the second that you are trying to promote before you run DCPROMO. Might not help but I had the same problem and I did that and the promo worked fine after that.

I'm kind of fumbling around here.

Where exactly should I input the IP address of my first server? I'm a little confused about what you're referring to here.

Then, run dcpromo.exe from the command line?

What I mean is right click on your network neiborhood (sp?)and go to properties on the second server.

Right click on (I beleive)Local Area connection and go to properties.

Double click TCP/IP

Where is says the address of DNS server. Type in the IP address of your DNS server.

Once that is done then on the same server (the second one) go to START--->RUN
and then type DCPROMO and let it run.

If you have any other problems please let me know. Best of luck.

Thanks for spelling that out for me. It's quite an obvious solution...after the fact. It's working.
