| My father runs the network with an iron fist. He says that if I add a directory *anywhere on the hard disk of any machine*, I will break his network.
Is it possible for the presence of a directory(no special names here) to cause harm to a windows 2000 network(of any type)?
Please back up your claims, I've tried so hard to convince him he's paranoid but to no avail.. He's been reading these MCSE study books nonstop and he seems to think they turn him into an all-knowing god of some sort. He has no tolerance for my suggestions and I'm very hurt...

| Perhaps he's hung up on your use of the term "directory". It sounds to me like what you want to do is add a new folder to the structure on a machine on "his" network. That will not cause any problems. Well, I suppose it actually depends on the purpose of the folder you want to create For instance, if it's going to house MP3s and you're going to share them from say, your machine to your neighbor's, then you will create traffic on "his" network and slow some connections but you should not break "his" network by adding a new folder.
Or am I wrong here? Are you really asking him to add a new directory to the Active Directory?

| nothing special, just something like c:\doom or c:\quake3, etc. in whichever partition is most spacious. | |

| Ahhh - for games! This may be why he is concerned. First you need to be sure the game is approved to run on the operating system you wish to load it on. Then there is the issue of playing the game across the network so this goes back to the network traffic.
It is always hard to convince a hard core network admin that games deserve a place on their network

| Typically of creating a directory/folder in a PC to store data is harmless as long as there are no executables or any kinds. In another word, if it cannot contain a virus, it should save.
However, if the folder is created via installation of a software program, it can effect the local pc that is installed on. However, most of the time will be local effect and no impact on the network with the exception of network bandwidth.
Let's just say the MS network sometime has its own mystery of slowing down for no logical reasons... |
