| I am wondering and would like to know what motivates you all out there into studying or pursuing a career in the IT field. This is considering the fact that the IT job market and prospects are bleak especially right now.
Well, I for one am being motivated by the fact that am trilled by IT with a huge passion for it and how it works. On the other hand lets hear your opinions and what you think about IT now and in the long run. Please, serious replies no jokes Peace Out.

| Knowing that at the end of my study I will be stuck with a 9ooo dollar debt and no job. | |

| Often enough you hear people say that what starts off as a hobby and then becomes a profession quickly loses that initial appeal. For me this is not true but there will always be tasks set you that are repetitive and boring. Money can't be a factor because I don't have any but conversely I also want to make some. I don't think I'll ever have much of a career in I.T. to be perfectly honest. The only way I might succeed is by starting a business. Having been self employed before lends me the advantage that I have a pretty good idea of the tax system. So these are my thoughts in the pre-era of the whole lot getting outsourced to the Philippines. | |

| Actually I'm glad you posted that because we now have 8 new threads on the 1st page of discussions that actually has something to do with I.T. (compared to 12 of them which have nothing whatsoever to do with it.) | |

| wanted a career that would not be boring. In this field if you stand still for a min you will be left in the dust of progress. I am trying to learn a little about alot and just trying to catch up to the current systems that are out there and no telling what is next that is what drives me. I just want to be able to walk into work and be that guy that everyone want to talk to because he is the one that has the answers.
(the picture in my head if of all my coworkers bowing down to me and brining me nice things so I will put their problem at the top of the list, oh that would be the life )

| Well I enjoy getting my hands on new hardware and trying to build a great pc or get a pc to run well, I also enjoy and hunger to learn new things. I also in addition to those things want to earn a decent living and know that I must pay my dues first before the good and stable income arrives. I worked in a grocery store for 10 years and got into management finding out that I would probably go postal if I had to do that for the rest of my life even though you can earn some good money when you get higher up in the company (which I had some prospects of doing from all the compliments my superiors gave me). My goal is to be an engineer at my job before I'm 35 so that gives me over 5 years to achieve that goal and hope that there is an opening within that time frame, or to become an analyst for them testing and implementing new technology. | |

this is a General discussion forum, therefore we dicuss general things not just about it, the rest of the forums are all for IT.
some of the threads that have started off here should have been started in other forums the "i've passed xxx' for example.
anyway back to the topic, computers has always been my hobby since school, although i went in to retail by accident, i still kept up tinkering with pc's, until 3 yrs ago when a friend who's in IT had an openeing at his place and he recommended me. Now i'm in i'm enjoying it and want to learn more, bit like Johnny 5, give me input must have input.

I don't mind threads which are non-I.T. related. Some of them are interesting/amusing and as you know I post to them. I feel though that their number is becoming disproportioned. I come here primarily to discuss I.T. If you look at the forum description it goes like this:quote: General discussion about anything and everything related to Information Technology and certifications.

Hey, people can do what they want. It's still possible to tell jokes and talk about appearing on TV within the context of I.T.

| All that's happening here is people are getting to know each other.
It's just like starting a new job. You begin talking shop to your new colleages then move onto other things. Before you know it you're all in the pub having the same sort of conversations you find here.

| For me it was because computers and being a medic is almost the same. Finding the problem and then fix it. Except with computers I cannot get virus, thrown up on, crap on and finally bleed on. Still, dealing with pain in the XXX people though LOL. | |

| darthw 2002-08-03, 11:52 pm |
| Earning certs is the best way for me to learn. I quickly lose motivation to "just read" about technology, so it helps me to focus and discipline myself by setting an end goal of certification. Plus it helps for the job market (at least when it improves again). | |
|
| RIGHT NOW!!! NOTHING..
I lot of replies have been clever or jokes but the truth of the matter is it gets tougher to obtain the next level when you look at the market. An also when you weigh the odds of doing it over because companys like MS and now Oracle find ways to just make money off of us (IT professional) It's seems the days of making a good product and having certified people to support them and bolster the company image are gone. except for Cisco they still seem to have their act together.

| Money
Even tho' I can just survive on this salary, I know there is plenty more ahead, for the right people, in the right economy.Just have to make myself more marketable than the competition.
2nd is the fight. I battle my pc's all the time.Drives me nuts, if I know there is an answer to a problem, but I don't have it yet.
So I fight with my pc's until I figure it out,and I love it.
3rd, I was messing with pc's as a hobby, long before they reached the level of saturation that they have now.So, I would still be doing it, just as a hobby.

| It's what we do. I often wonder why many people don't "understand computers". I'm not certain what their trying to "understand".
We're illusionists to some extent. We fix a problem in minutes that the people around us would have to hire consultants for (Not that I mind that, I love after-hours contracts ).
I still love just digging through, figuring out what's wrong, and then fixing it. I loved doing it in the automotive field as well. With software, your back doesn't hurt as much when your done and you can't get burned by an exhaust manifold.

| Why IT??????
Well I love a challenge. I enjoy figuring out why a video card won't load, determining why user can't access a shared drive, or just building and upgrading pc's. I just love it. It took me a while, but this is defintely my niche!!
Some money is great, but enjoying what you do and being challenged everyday is worth more. Well for me it is

Your right, atleast 2/3 rds. the money won't keep you motivated once you are making a good salary but I agree with everything else.

| Vendor exams allow me to assess my knowledge to ensure I will be working in a responsible manner. I am always careful to apply correct Industry Standards. What's the point of learning how to do things properly if employers are not encouraged to hire knowledgeable staff? I think Vendors should reward those who have completed their certifications by offering better incentives to employers if they hire certified staff. | |

| You cant stay "still" in this career and if you want to go higher in $$$ just continue to study and learn more stuff.
If I was a Accountant (not knocking accounting) and I wanted to make more $$$, I would have to do something to get more clients- not easy.
I enjoy the fact that my knowledge has some take in what I make! But then again that can kick you in the rear too.

| I started computers when I was 11 years old. Now I am 20 and Im smelling MCSE 2K (so close I can taste it, and it tastes good)!
My motivating factor is the dreams I have set out to achieve for myself. Many people live their lives and have these dreams of how they want life to be and they never quite become reality. My motivation behind studying is a ruthless, cuthroat, competitive nature that is essential in a field like this. My motivation comes from the knowledge of knowing that every second I waste someone is becoming better than me, however every second I use, I gain more ground. Failure is not an option. I MUST succeed. Hope that paints a clear picture for ya :-D

| I sat in front of a computer 5 years ago and fell in love with the whole thing, I'm hooked. I left a career in law enforcement after 10 years and wasn't happy with what I doing. My girlfriend suggested that since I was always tinkering with the damn things I might as well turn my new found hobby into a career. You think!! anyway I took out a loan (ouch) went to school and hear I am typing into a forum when I should be studying for my next cert. Oh I was 37 5 years ago. (you do the math) It's never to late for a positive change. I hope | |

| At first it was for the money but know it is for the challenge. You are constantly learning new things. You can make some good friendships in the process. I started out in electronics and was introduced to PC's in school and went from there. Just like any other professions there are good and bad times but you have to keep your dreams alive. There are jobs out there you just have to find them and get them. | |

| If it had not been for programming, i'd have been elsewhere, probably a greedy malevolent, unbenevolent; ill-disposed, ill-intentioned, ill-natured, ill-conditioned, ill-contrived; evil-minded, evil-disposed; black-browed; malicious; bitter, unamiable, venomous, grinding, galling, scum-sucking LAWYER. God forbid!.
I'm glad i'm into I.T. else, i'd have been somewhere else (which for sure, I wouldn't like).
I HATE LAWYERS. AND GOD HATES THEM TOO.

| 2lazybutsmart what have lawyers done to you to hate them this bad? I don't think all lawyers are bad or bias. | |

| I agree knowledge is power, a good reason for studing. However, i find i can program my computer to do what i want, and if i don't like i can tear it down and start fresh. Till i'm happy. Unlike men, they never agree to the Power Supply. | |

| For me it was a change of careers after being a cocktail waitress for many years. And actually the money was better but the benefits were lacking. When my son starte to take an interest and told me that I need to learn and get with it. I decided that I could not pass up his challenge. | |
|
| Let's be honest: money and ego...
... oh yeah, and thirst for knowledge, too

geezer,
Your determination is admirable, but at 20 shouldnt you be out drinking, commiting petty crimes of vandalism and graffitti, going to concerts, experimenting with mind altering drugs and trying to get laid?
try not to be too one dimentional and remember the saying, 'all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.'
I just dont understand the youth of today.
