Hey. This is my first post. Many technical issues to report, but here is what I experienced most recently. Have been experimenting with firewalls lately, trying to find out what works best for my home machine. Im plugged directly in to internet. No proxy or NAT traffic going on here. Installed Zone Alarm, but didnt like its functions at all. Having more luck with Sygate and NeoWatch. In particular, after uninstalling ZA, discovered that it still had services running at the vector table level and was unable to contact any machines that were non local. In fact, unable to ping default gateway. After tinkering, only recourse was to re-install the darned thing. Next chance I get, I'll be formatting and re-installing(unless someone has a better idea).
PS. Knew I should have created an image of active partition. If only I carried my work practices home with me.

Its odd how people have different experiences with the same software, I found ZA to be a superb piece of kit and didn't ave any trouble with it.

I unstalled ZA and rebooted, then installed another verion of Zonealarm to discover the number of hacks and intrution was on the high side like the the software did'nt totaly uninstall from my system.
I still use Zonealarm, but eather IE6.0 or zonealarm once in a while lock's me out from surfing.

Another option you have is to dedicate an old computer as a *nix firewall. I hear they work great and can do NAT and stateful inspection. Here are some ones I have found:

It is true ZoneAlarm does not completely uninstall form you're system when you do an uninstall.

To completly unistall ZA is a complicated process, details of which can be found on the ZA website.

p.s Which version os ZA were you using ??
the freebie or PRO ?

ZA Pro is soooo much better than the freebie version.

I have been using ZA Pro for a while now and I find it very good it, has saved me from 2 Trojans recently (Really must be more careful what I download )

Kazaa the script kiddies paradise.

I.ve had problems with zone alarm before, such as not being able to ping out even when ping was allowed out, and when shutting it down it still hangs around in the background.

Since I got XP have just been using the built in firewall with no probs and with my server just been using ISA.

The pro version of zone alarm seems to work much better than the free one.

I've been using ZA free version for 3yrs without any problems. Also I use the AVG Antivirus from grisoft. Both I have very acceptable considering the associated cost.

Look at Tiny personal firewall.IMHO the best software firewall. At the end of the day, save yourself the headache and go with a hardware solution. Some things are just worth the cost.

I will second the plug of AVG.Excellent product.Cannot believe its still free.Lightwieght and effective.Never been burned.

Besides adding a firewall........look into a spyware program (LavaSoft - Free & Free updates). You'll be surprised, what it finds, the first time you run it.

Lavasoft Adware is one of my favorite programs. Everyone should get it in my opinion.
