| I'm trying to help my boss secure some files on her windows 98se pc. She wants to have some confidential files on the computer that know one can acces except her. I'm not sure of how to go about this. She would like something quick but secure. How can I best accomplish this goal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!! | |

| Go to http://www.hotfiles.com and type in encrypt files. You will find programs that will do that for you. | |

| is there a way to accomplish this without adding additional software? | |

| In Windows 2000, yeah. Might try putting the files in winzip and password protecting it. Not sure how that works, but better than nothing. Don't think there is a way without additional software in 98. | |

| First make sure file sharing isn't enabled. If security's a big concern, get rid of Windows 98. 98 doesn't have any built in software so you'll have to add something new like Boulware5 said. | |

| Ok all you non believers why don't you just open explorer and find the files you want and change the file Attributes to H or hidden
You can do it from the DOS prompt by typing this
attrib +h {file name} then hit the enter key
who says DOS is dead
the files will be hidden from view to all except those who know where to find them

| thanks for all of the help. I was trying to avoid any new software on the computer since it is at work. I also wanted to lock the files and not just hide them. I was trying to avoid having the I.T. guys come to our building for what I thought would be a simple fix. She has, however, already talked to them and they recommend that we not do that. If she happens to get sniped in southeast asia or come down with ebola virus they won't have access to her password. We will just have to save the info on the network drives instead of on the local drives. The network drives require login.
Thanks again for helping!!!!! |
