| I'm totally not a linux/unix/Mandrake guy, and I dont have a clue about them. So is it worth downloading an Iso or two and installing it on a spare machine? I mean, what can I do with them? Where can you get applications for them like office?
Are they completely different to windows? like macs?
|
| yes download RedHat7.3 or Mandrake8.2
they are eassier for newuser to install
and if you do a full install you will have some office tools similar to MS Office for more help see Linux/Unix forum

| Linux and Unix are used almost exclusively for servers, usually functioning as web servers or database servers from what I have seen. The first time you install it and begin playing with them, it will feel totally different, but after a few months of regular use, it will seem just as natural as any other environment. Both have a reputation for being very stable, reliable and secure OS's and they are developer-friendly. Recently a good many office and productivity apps have been developed for the Unix environments as well as some excellent desktop environments. Get a book like "Running Linux" or "Red hat Linux Unleashed" and you will learn most of what you need to know to be a competent Linux user/admin, given a little bit of experience. Be warned, lots of Linux users are kind of fanatic about it, and sometimes you might find their attitudes baffling, but on the whole, most Linux users are helpful and you can find tons of info on the net. If you need more info, just ask. | |
