?'s about router setup
|
|
|
| My question is would it be better/easier to setup a network through a internet gateway router which is then connected to a switch or a router with a 4 or 8 port switch built in? | |

| I would go with the switch since you would not have to program it
Using the 2 routers you would have to program each port

| Use a Router from D-Link or Linksys that serves also as a DHCP-Server.It's also a Firewall. From there on, "expand" with as many Switches or Hubs as you want.
You'll find good Routers at Pricewatch.com for about $100.
Unless you really want to get into big $$$ and use Cisco-Routers,that will be the easy-way-out.
Of course, will many People reply after me, that you can also use a Win2000 Server as a NAT using two Nic's.
Or, use a ISA-Server,if you like to play with Things...highly secure.
I tried them all,for educational purpose, but always had my trusty old D-Link Router close on Hand.

| thanks everyone. I have another question in regards to Netgear routers(ro318 or rt311). Has anyone used them and are they reliable?
Feel free to offer you opinions.

| I have a Netgear RT311. I don't think it's being made anymore not sure, but I have not had any problems out of it. I have had it running for about alittle over 1 year and 3 months now. | |

| i've been messing with ISA at school lately and it's excellent (a little fuzzy to setup correctly) but once you get all the kinks worked out it really is excellent. | |

| what kind of setup you're planning on?
the usual setup in a company is a router connected to a hub (or switch).
you could connect directly to the router if your network is really really really small.
|
| My setup will consist of 5 ws and a laptop. I was just wondering about the ease of setup and security concerns. Which would be best? | |

| Go with a hardware solution. However Linux is also a very good router solution as well.Secure VPN too.
Jombewoof..what is so excellent about ISA?

| so there are 6 computers, i guess you'll have to go with router-hub configuration.
about security, try to get router that have NAT/firewall capability, and don't forget to turn on the access-list.
|
| Thanks you to all that has helped. I just have to wait to get everything setup. |
