Have you heard that VeriSign is sending out what appear to be invoices telling you it’s time to renew your domain name? It’s true; I received one in yesterday’s mail. If you sign it you are bound by their rules and your domain name is transferred to their servers. And the cost is double what I currently pay. How do they get away with this? Isn’t there a governing body that polices such practices on the net? Or is it legal, and the responsibility lies with us the domain holder?

Only people that do notpay attention to the fine print fall into this shamble.
Not everyone uses VeriSign and people who just open emails and not think, will have more hell and more problems.
Even Verisign is a spammer!

Thanks for the warning.

I don't even pay attention to my domain registrar's ads or warnings

Indeed. I've been noticing that too. Not just spam e-mail, but pop-up windows everywhere. Were they taken over by X-10?

It is indeed true. I got a bunch as well. It is very misleading, on the verge of dishonnesty -- on the wrong side of that verge too!

I felt like reporting them to the BBB at the time, but never followed up with it. BTW, they bought network solutions, which is what their angle is in terms of trying to make people switch...

I know this is an old thread, but after receiving an e-mail today, I had to reply.

The e-mail was from VeriSign, and it details a "Free Internet Security Guide". Given all the negative comments in this thread regarding VeriSign, I have not read the rest of the mail.

However, here's what makes me unhappy; this is a copy and paste of the e-mail header:-

Subject: FREE Internet Security Guide
From: VeriSign
To: *********@btinternet.com
Date: Wed, 29 May 2002 16:15:20

I've blanked out my full e-mail address for ovious reasons, and here's another copy and paste from the body of the e-mail:-

Yes, it says Cert21.com!

I would invite the webmaster's comments.

Thanks Hippo, and everyone else.

The bottom line is (for me), is how can you trust a security company that sends you a phony invoice and tries to get you to pay more for your DN and transfers you to another server.

I’m already apprehensive enough about getting ripped off. Not EVERYTHING is about money. I want to be able to trust those I do business with. As I want them to trust me.
