| I want to dual boot my win2000pro machine with mandrake linux
first is this possible I have 2 20 gig drives I already have win2k installed on the first drive I want to keep that totally separate from the linux drive (I'll even switch drives if I have to but I'd rather not, like plug in drive a when I want to use linux and plug in drive b when I want to use win2k)
also what do you guys think would be the easiest way to set this up. I've never installed linux before (actually other than once or twice I've never even played with it) so any advice you guys would have would be appreciated

| Firstly, make sure you get hold of partition magic and partition your hard drive as it suites you. But make sure win2k is partitioned as fat32, otherwise you would not be able to install Mandrake or Linux. Then after you are happy with the installs you can then change your win2k partition to Ntfs, well that's if you want to anyway. However ntfs is best when installing win2k as it brings out the true beauty of the OS in terms of security and file and folder sharing, permission, encryption etc. I hope this info at least points you in the right direction.
Let's know how you get on, cheerio.

| You can use GRUB or LILO instead of getting something expensive like Partition Magic. Just go ahead and install Mandrake and when it asks you if you want to intall the boot loader on the MBR say no. That way you will be allowed to choose at boot time which OS to use. | |

| I have partition magic but why would I want to use it?
I want both OS's on a different drive completely independant of each other.
the way it sits now is disk0 is partitioned into 4 logical drives and drive1 is completely empty (no partitions, no nothing) and thats the drive I want to install linux onto.
also I was worried about my hardware and drivers for it, is it relatively easy to find drivers for modems, my voodoo3 graphics card, and a soundblaster awe32 (I'll check drivershg when I get the mandrake cd later this week I just want to cover all my bases first)

| All you need is the Mandrake disk it will ask if you want to use existing free space or you can choose how want to partition you drive .Use Disk Druid or fdisk also use lilo for dual booting. Mandrake has all the drivers you need included . | |

good to know the drivers are included I'll d/l it with the dsl at school and burn it to a cd

| As mentioned earlier you'd won't need Partition Magic, since you have 2 separate Hard Drives and all the drivers for the hardware you listed should be included in the distrobution.
You could also do a network installation with a boot disk.

| I got no message from em so I called the dude back on monday and he was like "we've got the HR thing sorted out but now there is some issue with one of their new customers and blah blah blah" so I was like "well what should I do I've heard nothing but good about this company and would like to work there but with all this I think I should look for something else in the meantime" and he was like "well I have a meeting with them on wednesday so call me thursday we really want you to work here, we think your perfect for the position, your first on the list as soon as we get the go ahead to hire people blah blah blah"
so I called him today and got his voicemail (probably my fault I didn't wake up till 3:30 this afternoon)
btw what was my icq # so I can reinstall that

yer a nutbar if you don't. There are lots of little things you should know before trying (note trying) to install it. Your icq # is 157439021 are you telling me you can't remember yer icq # !!!?? what kind of geek are you?

Like anything in life, it is better to assume and prepare for the worst, whilst
hoping for the best. If you are expecting peaches and cream, it isn't such a big deal
when you get it, but it's a huge deal when you don't

| You don't need a Network. I should have been more specific. You could do a FTP install with the Network Boot Disk. | |

| You might want to try a Broadband connection before you try and download Mandrake-- also be prepared for a hairy installation experience-=- Linux is NOT windows and multiply any pain you felt on your Win 2K install by a factor of 10 for Mandrake- ( which by the way is a easiest GNU flavor to install)....
I had to download the ISO disk images which were about 650Mb a piece to CD...
then I tried a CD installation whick constently failed I then made a CD boot disk which also failed(the main issue with a boot LILO/boot floppy for a Win2k machine is that 2K doesnt support RAWWRITE, so you either need to make the disc on a 9.X machine, a linux box, or use the boot drive maker that comes with the Mandrake- another plus in its corner over RedHat or SuSe)...I shifted gears to a hard drive install which worked better but then hung up half way into the phase to load(note the boot floppy for CD is different from the boot disc for hard drive... However the good news was that I had enough GNU kernal on my hard drive to allow a CD installation. All in all from download to first boot it took about 3 1/2 weeks-- and now my girlfriend is a linux widow... IF you see her online somewhere tell her I said "HI" LOL

| As long as your hardware's supported this shouldn't be a problem. I had a Voodoo3 a couple years ago and Mandrake was able to autodetect it. Almost any soundblaster card should either be autodetected, or possible to enable support for on a modern Linux distro. Your modem may be a different matter though. Most internal modems are winmodems which for the most part aren't supported. My advice is to get a hardware based modem as soon as you can afford it if you don't already have one. It's a hassle to configure winmodems and they don't perform as well as their hardware based counterparts.
When you're going through the installation make sure to create a boot disk. If for some reason, the installation doens't modify the mbr correctly you can just use it too boot, login as root, and issue "lilo" to reinstall the boot loader.

| I set up red hat and the installation was relatively painless (it detected all my hardware except the modem which I was expecting)
I've since gotten my hands on a PII 333 with 192 megs of RAM (almost out of the stoneage) and it runs excellently on that box.
with all the work I'm doing at school linux has kind of taken a backseat to Win2K, but thanks for all yer help (all ya'all) |
