hello ...
I was wandering, in my computer that I am learning with...It is a ATX style with a socket 7 ...when moving the cooling fan...I see notches on the sides of this fan...I am trying to figure out how to remove, to see what type cpu this system has...but if I do remove the cooling fan...am I suppose to apply the "heat sink compound" to it again, or can I just "put it back on"?
any information will be appreciated.
thanks

I've been building systems for the past 6 years and only used it once. Couldn't get the dang fan back off to replace it. As long as the heatsink is making good, solid contact with the cpu, you shouldn't have any problem. My Athlon runs 24/7 with no compound. Heck, I didn't even get any when I purchased the cpu and fan.

From all of my work. You can take off the fan and reapply it if already been in use for sometime.

All shops use thermal grease. We put it on every new box that goes out. With some of these newer cpu's, things are getting really hot. We even have people bringing boxes in because they are overheating. Windows will act crazy or just plain crash after 5 mins. If you crack a fan you are supposed to clean all of the grease off and put a new glob on to ensure a perfect contact between the cpu and the sink. You can take off the fan and put it back on again with the same grease no problem. If the grease is rock hard then you have to make sure to line it up perfectly again. This can be done safely it just isn't the recommended way.
