Resume Question Again

| Hi all another thread about resumes. My question though is this. Do you list your employment on your resume that is non IT related. For example I have been working part time as a hardware/net tech, but at the same time I was teaching Truck driving at a local community college. Now do I list this? and before that I was just a plain old truckdriver, again list or not.. or are we in the day of Related Resumes?

| Some resume sites will say to list all employment history, & others say to only list relevant work experience. It has been my experience to usually only list related work experience, at least on my last 2 resumes (you only have so much room to work with). Although, most resume tip sites will say to not have any gaps in employment history because the employer will inquire about those.
My last resume for my current job I left out my temp job (only lasted 3 months & wasn't really related). It left a gap but they never inquired about it. Employers tend to like to see previous work experience that lasted 6 months or longer. I've been lucky that each job I've held has lasted at least a year or more. They don't like to see a bunch of 2-3 month terms at any job. Shows you are not committed. But that has only been my experience. Good Luck in your career advancement!  | |

| if u do not want to list yr driving instruction as previous employment u could list it in another section where u may be asked about people skills or something. | |

| Having worked for a VP of a huge company (we'll pick you up) as his assistant, I was given the wonderful task of going through the resumes before I placed them on his desk. Only list the information relevant to the position applied for. I was instructed that if the resume did not have any work related experience on it, to give to back to HR with the reply 'does not meet qualifications'. As 'thecomeons' stated, list extra information under 'other skills'. It shows you are people oriented and a team player. | |

| depend on what kind, if it is management! OK
If other, only if u list them to fill in the space. Otherwise, place those that is more related and important to the objective job | |

| I think it's all relative. If this part-time employment is the only job you've had in the field, you might want to include the truck driving-especially if it shows a good work pattern (maybe you worked for the same employer for a long period & steadily increased your responsibilities. In this case I'd include it). When I first changed to the IT field, I included my mental health experience because I thought it displayed a good work history, and showed people what made me different from every other applicant to the entry-level jobs, namely my "people" skills. This really did give me an edge to getting those first few jobs. Now, I've been in the IT field for a few years and so no longer do this. Just my experience... | |

| Speaking as an employer.....list everything that you've done!
When I look at a potential candidates CV, I am interested in not only the techie stuff but what else they've done with themselves....you may be surprised but past jobs may have included skills that canididates believe are not important. Ever been a waiter or waitress????? What are you like dealing with customers? What do you do with irate customers who demand the best.......catch my drift? | |

| What to put on your resume is a Catch-22 situtation to some extent. If you have enough years experience in your chosen field, don't worry about listing non-related stuff. However, if you are a newbie, it's best to list all employment to show a pattern of stability to your potential employer.
Also, keep in mind what AndyC mentioned. Somethings are more related to IT than you might think, such as customer service. Plus, if you have had any management experience, whether in IT, fast food, or retail it is good to list that as well.

| I don`t list my 17 years as a barber, its too left field.
I can see a hiring manager doing a double take on it.
If I get to an interview I might mention it because I have a chance to make it more relevant "IE: people skills" in person. | |

I think that illustrates the difference between a resume and a CV once again.
Speaking as a former recruiter, I preferred to see mostly related work experience, but any sort of management experience would definitely be OK.
It all depends on how much you have. If you are fresh out of school and don't have much experience then that's one thing. Otherwise it starts to feel like resume padding and it makes it harder to get to the stuff that I'm looking for. | |

| I have question for you Drummer (speaking from your recruiter experience), what about applying for positions that you see advertised with multiple recruiters. For example, there's a (obviously the same) position I'm interested in that 5 different recruiters are advertising. It seems like a no-brainer, but do you think there's any harm in sending off to all of them? Would I look better to the client if more than one of their recruiters sent my resume to them? |
