Can anyone tell me whether or not two servers that are going to be in a cluster need to be in a domain or can they both be standalone in the same workgroup?

I've been looking around but I cant find a definitive answer

You might want to be a little more specific about what type of cluster you're trying to setup. A Beowulf cluster has no concept of domains or workgroups. That's the only type of cluster I know much about.
