After having my new computer for over a week now. It has Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition on it. I really do enjoy it but I do miss Windows 98SE. My question to everyone is. In your opinion which operating system is your favorite choice? (Win 95,98, ME, 2000.etc....)

Win2k for business, WinXP for home.

Red Hat Linux 7.2

I use W2K Pro at work and at home. I like the stability! May eventually move to XP, but only after I test it for awhile. (I never upgrade to a new OS right away, like to give M$ a chance to work the bugs out. )

I agree with mrfixit let em fix it before I'll buy it I'm still using win98se at home and perfectly happy with it and win2kpro at school (if I had the money I'd probably go for win2k at home but my sys couldn't handle it)

win2k is my favorite, but i like 98se a lot too. Red Hat and Solaris are my favorites in the linux/unix world.

Win 2k is awesome. I use Advanced Server at home and school. I could never go back to 98.

I was always having issues with 98SE, but since using 2000pro on my home workstations, I have not had any of those problems (freezes, lockups, BSOD, etc). I also have 2000 Adv Server on my server at home and have been pleased with it. I, too, am somewhat cautious about XP....especially after reading a review in this month's issue of PC World, which focuses on all of the capatability problems XP has.

Since I had this new computer I really enjoyed XP. It has not giving me problems. It seems to be a great OS as far as I can see. But I have thought about putting Win2K on it.

Win2K is the best as its so stable. I still keep W98SE so my kids can run some legacy games.

Me personally I like win2k. Use at both work and home. Don't get me wrong I like Xp but I will give it a year or so for all the bugs. Just my opinion though.

Win2K Pro definatly overall. Although for games - 98SE. ME is horrible in my experience and causes many headaches. Haven't played with XP.

At the moment I am using win 98se and I am very happy with it but I am looking forward to buying a copy of win2k pro soon and dual booting it with 98se.

I've seen several references to freeBSD. I'm not familiar with that OS. Can someone tell me about it?

I think FreeBSD's homepage has a much nicer description then what I could come up with. Here it is:

"FreeBSD is an advanced operating system for Intel ia32 compatible, DEC Alpha, and PC-98 architectures. It is derived from BSD UNIX, the version of UNIX developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It is developed and maintained by a large team of individuals. Additional platforms are in various stages of development."

Also, IMO the following statements compare it nicely to Linux if you're familiar with that. I remember seeing it posted on some forums a while ago but I don't recall where it was or who posted it:
Everything that's good in Linux is twice as good in FreeBSD.
Everything that's bad in Linux is twice as bad in FreeBSD.
Everything that's good about Linux users is twice as good with FreeBSD users.
Everything that's bad about Linux users is twice as bad with FreeBSD users.

Thanks ccie....I'll check out the home page. I'm trying to learn some Linux fundamentals at this time, but feel pretty lost when trying to navigate in it.

Stick with it. Most techies love it once they get over the initial learning curve. Better start out with Linux and move to FreeBSD later. FreeBSD installs are somewhat spartan for a newbie.
