| Ok everyone, here's my first help support. A friend has a computer, not really that old may 2 or 3 years, running Windows 95. He has some old files that he wants me to take off and just clean up the system. He also wants me to install Windows 98 on this computer. I have never "installed" another operating system on a computer before in "real life". But I have a idea how to do and I will share with you all how I feel i should do it, and if I am wrong anywhere please tell me...
- Put the Cd in the drive, and go to "Control Panel"
- Click on Add new Hardware/software
- Allow the CD to run through set-up
I don't know if I will have to install drivers or anything, since I don't think he has any disk for any. I don't think he has a printer, he may. But any help or information you can offer me will be appreciated.
Thanks | |

| Just a personal thing but I would put the CD in first and it should auto run. If it does not then go to Start -> Run -> then type the drive letter of the cd such as d:\setup.exe.
this should then run the install.

| I don't know if you have already loaded the new OS yet, but I usually go to device manager and write down the names of the things that may need to have a driver updated (i.e. video cards, sound cards, nics etc.) so that in case I need to download a driver, I know what the device is without having to open the box and trying to find out by actually looking at the card. This way if I need to find a driver for the ATI Rage Pro, I don't need to guess which card it is when Windows tells me it found an unknown device. maybe this only happens to me? | |

| ok..when you say go to the Device Manager to see what drivers need to be updated, how will I know...by clicking on the "plus sign" of the hardware or is there some other way that I am not familar with, and you mentioned downloading the updated driver...??
sorry to sign so
but It's still so much I have to learn and willing to learn, and without you guys and some common sense...well thanks a bunch..

| When you look in device manager, if you see a yellow exclaimation point or a red x next to a device (nic, sound card etc.) and when you click it and choose properties, it may say "this device is not working properly" or something else like that, you need to update the driver. The problem you may have is if you don't know exactly who the manufacturer is and the model # or name, you can't replace the driver. If you have the latest or at least ones known to work with the new OS, you can load them from your files. All you need to do in Win98 is hightlight the device in Device Manager that isn't working properly, choose properties, click on the drivers tab, click the update driver button and point to the new driver. Hope this helps. | |

| Also I forgot to say that if you go to manufacturer's website you can usually download the drivers you need. I wouldn't always count on HP though. | |

| The easiest way to upgrade your Win95 to WIN98 is to use the WIN98 upgrade CD.
I do not think you can upgrade a win95 to win98 using a full version of Win98 unless you re-install win98 and load all your hardware drivers and application software.
It sounds like a lot of work for a newbies….If you use the upgrade CD, it will retain all your file, soaftware..etc. If you do not like if for any reason (or if your application is broken because of the upgrade) , you can remove 98 and go back to your old setting.
Upgarde your PC to 98
Run windows update
The Way to GO !!!!!!!!!!

| i remember a few years ago trying to upgrade from the full ver cd I'm pretty sure what I did was change the version# in msdos.sys (NOT RECCOMENDED FOR NEWBIES) it was that or something similar |
