Sorry, I don't know what else to suggest. When Windows acts up on me, I try to boot into safe mode and that usually works. Did you try running scandisk to see if there were any disk problems that may be causing the hang?

did that, and disk is fine...
will try the safe mode again, and see.

Hi Smite,

Try running the diskcleanup utility, then run a complete scandisk with a surface scan. After these have completed, run Defrag.

Did you try running scandisk?
Defrag won't run if there are errors on the drive.

I had a similar problem with my Compaq laptop. Defrag kept restarting and after 10 attempts gave up and left a message saying that something (a process) was writing to the hard drive, hence the restarts.

What I did was alt-ctrl-del, and shut down as many as I could of the processes that were running; except those that would cause the laptop to shutdown.

This worked for me, but as I said, it's a Compaq craptop PC.

If all else fails, use the pcrestor.bat on the windows disk to re-install all system files. This will re-install all the files without resetting the current configuration of your PC.

The path is x:\tools\reskit\pcrestor.bat (where 'x' denotes the cd-rom drive letter).

It will look like the regular Windows install, but do not panic. It is only overwriting the system files for windows.

This should take care of any problem you are having with the 'defrag' program.

I do suggest once you have done this, you run 'scandisk' on a thorough scan, then run 'defrag'. This will eliminate any doubt of having bad sectors in your drive.

Also, once you have done this, you will need to return to the Windows update site and re-install all the critical updates.

That file, pcrestor.bat, is also not on the win2000 CD....I just looked. Which OS are you referring to, cmaness?

it is on the Win98 SE disk. At least I know it's on the full version and the OEM version. Did you use an upgrade version?

Run scan disk from a startup disk first. Use the question mark to get your options. Run it twice to make sure it has caught everything.

Running from dos ensures no app is interfering with the scandisk. after the scan boot . hit ctrl- alt - del once. Stop any unneeded task. Probably everything except explorer. Then run the defrag.

if it completes successfully and you feel brave.

disable your virtual memory. (make sure you have atleast 64 megs of ram. Then reboot and defrag. this will clean up the swap file. After wards set your swap file back to 1.5 the size of your ram. This should be good enough, or just let windows do it.

good luck.

I have always found that defrag in W98 keeps restarting because other programs are working in the background. I get round this problem by closing all programs using Ctrl-Alt-Del EXCEPT Explorer and Systray. Defrag then runs OK.

I know other people who have the same problem and use the same remedy successfully.

Good luck.
