| Does anybody have any preferences for non-popular operating systems? | |

| I don't have it, but I've used it before and BEOS is awesome. | |

Ugh . . . I hated it. Reminded me of a Mac.

| ya, well head of the development team that everyone hated left apple (or got fired) then formed his own little company.. so ya it's like mac, but i think it's better. | |

| I haven't used it much, just tried it out one day (the d/l version). I heard it was good for MM stuff, but I was never much into that. Still, I wish they would do a little better to give MS and Linux some more competition. It looks ideal for a lot of people, pretty easy to use. | |

| Whats your favorite distro of linux? I use SUSE, but alot of people tell me that they like slackware. | |
| Randy 2001-07-16, 11:30 am |
| I use Slackware most of the time, but use Debian as well. Actually I find that apart from the programs that come with the distro and the desktop environment, most Linux distros are more alike than different. | |

| Well, the least popular OS I've tried and liked is NetBSD, and I don't think that could really be called unpopular. I tried out BeOS once and didn't like it because of the Mac interface. I ran into OS/2 once, but didn't get enough into it enough to have much of an opinion. I think one of the major companies here in Lakeland still uses OS/2 heavily on their corporate network, or at least they were still using it a few months ago. | |

| Others you ask
I actually like using some of the stuff.I interact a lot with yep..OS/390 MVS VSM.My company moves massive amounts of data through these systems. As well as TPF.Its very much alive and well.We have some real pros...we also use a proprietory legacy database that runs on the mframe. The reason I bring it up is , that system was down for a total of 3.5 hours last quarter....2.5 were scheduled IPL outages.Even our high end Unix boxes dont have those bragging rights

| I used some nameless OS on Commodore VIC 20 at one time. But the first OS'es I did real work on was VM/370, CMS, OS/VS1 and later MVS (aka OS/VS2). I am still using DR DOS and at one time used the OS on LISA (the precursor to MAC). I worked on NOS and a little on NOS/VE (from Control Data, remember them?).
However, I have been on the other side too, taking part in the development of a once succesfull minicomputer operating system called SINTRAN. I did lots of different work there but my main speciality was virtual memory management. I also participated in some less successfull OS development projects.
So I am commited to make SINTRAN my favourite. You know SINTRAN, don't you?

I worked with MVS for a while. Hated it. But then I was a coder (COBOL) when I worked with it. But it is quite a powerful system. OS/2 may not be unpopular, but not a lot of people seem to be learning it these days. SINTRAN I have never heard of . . . Sinclair, on the other hand . . .

| VAX VMS is my worst pain. Worked on it a couple of times for some atiquated software development. I would choose Unix and OS/2 ten times over before having to work on this OS again (source for the NT environment).
For installation, an old version of Unix or Lynx without slackware on a new computer, or even better, on a new laptop with a PCMCIA network adapter and interchangable drive devices (like scratching on a chalk board to administrators when you say that). Just gotta love Kernel building, like programming in binary, you can do it but is painfully un-enjoyable.

| I liked using OS/2 even if it has the feel of windoz.
Only saw it at a gummit computer, I had to dual boot my workstation into windows 95 from OS/2 to access some end user programs.
weird setup | |
