| I really would like to get XP, but home or professional? It IS my home computer, but I would like to have professional to learn on for the experience. And what about OEM packaging? Is that risky or just a good way to save money? I've seen prices from $126-$299 for what appears to be the same product.
I'm so confused! What would YOU do?

| Get OEM. Why pay more than you have to? You just wont get a nice looking box/packaging and manual with OEM. (big deal). | |

| Normally OEM licenses are only sold with a new PC.
You'll be lucky if you can get one without buying a new machine...

I got my windows 2000 CD OEM without much searching around. In fact, here's one from a quick google search:

| quote: What remains unchanged is that the Windows XP OEM license is between the OEM and the end user and that the product is typically licensed for use with the hardware or PC on which it was first installed.
I found it on MS Website.
It's good for you if you can get OEM licenses like, 'cause in my area most shops won't sell any MS OEM product w/out requiring you to buy some hardware.

| I must add that, if my memory serves me well, on MS OEM products packages (on the cellophane in fact) it's written : "Only to be sold with a new PC". | |

| I clicked this link thinking you were going to ask what Linux distro to go with. Windows XP? Come on
A couple week ago someone posted a link to a 2 bundles of Microsoft sofware that Microsoft was offering to IT pros for $300 and $400. I'd suggest either getting that or an OEM version of XP.

| XP is just a Beefed up GUI version of Win 2k. I have a copy of XP Pro and find it a pain in the arse, God damn balloons pop up everywhere. Personally I think 2k Server is the best that M$ has to offer. I run it on a dual boot with Red Hat Linux 8.0. I also run Red Hat 8.0 on my laptop. Give it a try you might like it. | |

| Well, I ordered XP Pro. Had my heart set on it, don't you know?
I intend to look into Red Hat also. I may put it on another 'puter one of these days. I may try it as a dual boot on hubby's.
Thanks for all the input! |
