problem:
his computer connects on dial-up, but cannot load a page (cannot find server), but mine will work fine.
tech support had him change his TCP/IP settings, he's updated his browser, removed and reinstalled the dial-up program, and the machine still has the problem.
(and yes, we're still running Windows ME)

You still got the packing box it came in?

Did no one take over the business or the support side of it? I ask cos I bought a Compaq laptop from a chain store that went out of business two years later. A few weeks after that, Dixons wrote me and said that they were covering my extended support warranty for the reamaining three years.

actually, we bought it online, from an auction, and the seller was an individual. The computer was new when we bought it, and haven't had any other trouble with it since we bought it 8 months ago.
I'm curious about what could cause it to do this? I figured it was some settings for the server that were wrong, not the computer itself, and it WILL find the server and load the pages correctly---occasionally. It's just frustrating because it will only work once out of about 25 times.

I'd try dialing into a diffrent Number and see how that works. If all else fails try clearing out your cache and see how that works. Just a last ditch effort but you'd be surprised how many times that actually works.

Try a different browser all together.

under internet options -> Connections tab, make sure the 'Never dial a connection' option is not checked

go through add/remove programs and remove everything that is not used.

i remember one time where our computer refused to go on the internet and norton anti virus brought up some message about not being able to open sockets or something (i have it set up to scan incoming emails).

i made several calls to our isp, but got nowhere. they checked the settings in dun and got me to reinstall winsock32.dll

turned out i had downloaded and installed some form of gator when i downloaded audiogalaxy.

yes, try connecting to a different isp. that will help you decide whether the settings are wrong for your existing isp.

if all else fails, reinstall the o/s. or install a different o/s.

good luck.

okay, thanks guys. I've got a few more things to check out. We've done several of these things already. I just don't understand how come my computer can load a page everytime, and his won't, when we're dialing up to the same number, and all the other settings seem to be the same.
We're almost ready to format and go back to Windows 98 for him.

Thecomeons, I had that crappin' gater thing on my machine for a while too. What was really bad was when I downloaded KaZaA. Things locked up and got really funky till I got tired of messing around and formatted.
