adding new RAM to w98se machine????

| I have been trying to add more RAM to my machine (an IBM desktop which runs Windows 98SE) and it doesn't appear to be registering it.
Can anyone tell me if there are any jumper settings that i should be changing on the motherboard or whether new added RAM is automatically detected on startup?
I'm not even sure if the RAM itself has integrity as it was taken from another 'dead' machine.
All help appreciated.

RAM needs to be compatible with your system. I recommend that you go to the Crucial site and check for compatibility. It could be the module you are using, especially if it came from a dead machine, is no good or incompatible. Test it on another machine. | |

Another resource would be www.kingston.com. Unless of course you have a home built machine. If the RAM is dead, try some quality RAM out there on the market. You can get a 256MB DIMM PC133 for around $35. | |

| WEll, Is your motherboard suports soft menu?? Most of the motherboards there days(1998 onwards)come with soft menu support meaning that you dont need to change any jumper setting.
But yoiu shouldn't need to change any jumper setting in the first place.
Just make sure that the RAM is of the same type / its supported by your Motherboard.
If you are using a Pentium then its more likely that its PCI-133 or PCI-100 SDRAM.
I dont think mixing 100 and 133 matters (im using it).
Just check that you have inserted the sticks properly.
As they came from a dead PC you should check if it works with other boxes ..other than yours. It might not be a compatibility issue. Dead PC--- does that mean the PC was burned up.. power surge or ??
Just check the sticks against the other machines.. if they work fine on others then they shuold work on your PC.

The RAM should be automatically detected at the boot-up, you dont need to configure anything in BIOS.

| Try this, go to start, run and type in msconfig. Go to advanced and uncheck limit memory to. Reboot see if the memory is recognized. If so put the check mark back in limit memory to. Hope this helps  | |

| By the way..its the Boot.ini file that you are lookin at/ I mean.. Look under Boot.ini tab for this.

| I had the same problem a few years back I installed memory in a friends machine and windows wasn't recognizing it. After allot of digging I found the solution. It worked in that case I hope it helps here as well. Merry Christmas everyone |
