Author In a cert slump. Help needed!

Hello Everyone,

I am in a cert slump. I cannot seem to motivate myself for the MCSA/E. Or, any other cert for that matter.

I work about 50-60 hours per week and am attending night school two days per week for an MBA.

I am married and have two kids.

I have about 3 late evenings per week to use for studying certs. I have all the books I need plus CBT Nuggets, and study guides from Transcender, Test King, and Troy/Test Killer. The only thing I'm lacking is motivation.

After the first of the year, I will be commuting 100 miles to work every day. I was thinking of getting some audio tapes, but don't want to waste money on something I won't use.

Can anyone help me get jumpstarted? Thanks!

start teaching your boy, the microsoft way, you'll be surprised how much you learn and understand by teaching someone else, especially someone who has a young enquiring mind

but what if the boy is well versed in the way of the penguin? it could be hard to stop him from thinking he is using linux.

i do know what you mean though. the motivation i had for my a+ was being made redundant. i did my core exam the week after i was seeking employment. mind you, i got a job within a month and wasn't able to take my o/s exam for another six.

Take advantage of the small pockets of time during your work day - you get breaks and lunch - get away from people - go to your car and read in the car with no distractions.

Personally, I think you're simply taking on too much all at once. Why stress over certs when you're working towards your MBA. One thing at a time for a little piece of mind

Hey man, let me give you some advice....
50-60 working hours a week, plus night school for an MBA plus a wife and 2 kids...
you need to take a rest dude, that's twice what most people can take, you'll wear yourself out and want to stop everything soon...
Keep up the good work but don't load yourself down, that's why you think your in a slump already..

i say wait till you finish the MBA, then you'll still be used to school and will be able to devote yourself to the cert's..
Good Luck.

I think these guys are right. You can't do it all at once.

The only other suggestion I have is that you take public transport to work if that's possible, and study on the bus or train.

In the famous words of Ferris Beuller,
"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and take a look around once in a while, you can miss it."

Wat to go Crutch...
Just to add to the general concensus.
Stick with the MBA, and do the certs when you feel comfortable or when the mba is over.

Good Luck ....

Would agree with the rest in that a rest/break from certification testing would do you better. After looking at your shedule, just concentrate on your degree and family. You will know and feel it when the time comes for you to take up certifications again.

The same sentiments is with me...I think you're trying to bite off more than you can chew right now.

i think that you need to have the motivation within yourself. if you don't, don't do it; it's not right.

my advice is to chill and enjoy some quality time with your kids, be it computers or whatever. pretty soon they'll be too old to want to hang-out with their mom or dad. they'll be dating and getting jobs.. and you'll have missed the boat working on things you didn't even want -!

Divorce the wife, sell the kids on ebay use the money from the kids to buy a really good fake MBA. Then work on your MCSA, or hell sell the wife and just buy one like that one guy did a few months ago.

Thanks for the overwhelming responses. I will do exactly that; take a breather from the certs. And hope that M$ doesn't change things too much in the next 18-months.

ChrisDfer-
My wife's one of those hot "mail-order" brides from the USSR. My daughter's a medical prodigy and my 11 year-old son is already 5'10" and has a great "fade-away jumper". The kids are my retirement. My wife's for show.

BTW, I bought the kids on eBay. You should try that too.
