dose this happen cos of change in hardware? I thought xp had a limit on hardware changes?

If you do have to format an reinstall it may be worth copying and saving file called wpa.dbl in a safe place. This will save you having to reactivate.

you will find this file under windows/system32/wpa.dbl

once you have reinstalled XP copy wpa.dbl into system32 directory.

not sure though wether wpa.dbl still be compatiable with new hardware.

think I would prefer the solution in the link you provided of changing registry.

reformating and installing OS last resort.

mind you as you are programmer you probably have more an idear about this than what I do.
