| I have a friend who is thinking of moving into the database arena of IT. She asked me what database certs are available and the only thing I could think of was Oracle. There has to be more than just that, though. She used to work for a manufacturing firm as an Engineering Associate and is now a data entry supervisor for a tax software company. So, I think she has the basic tools for learning databases. What certs are out there?
Thanks! | |

| I'm thinking that a database cert could be a great way for her to get out of what she's doing and into a great career.
Thanks | |

| Of course there's always MS's database cert: MCDBA - SQL | |

| I thought about the MCDBA. But I didn't really know if a newbie could start with something like this. I also thought about MCSD (programming), but most of the programmers on this board say that you will be shooting yourself in the foot by getting the MCSD before getting experience. My friend hates classes, because the material isn't taught fast enough. I thought about CBT's but am not sure where to look other than CBTNuggets (and they offer no DBA courses) | |

| www.testout.com - I used these and like them. They are pricey though
Here's a link to the SQL stuff at LearnKey | |

| Microsoft:
MCSD
MCAD (recommended)
MCDBA (recommended)
Oracle:
DBA (recommended)
Sybase:
ASAA
ASAP
IBM:
DB2
those are the big ones, anyway. i would say the Microsoft MCDBA and the Oracle DBA are probably the most recognized. anything with SQL is good, and red brick warehouse knowledge comes in handy so tell her to look out for those.

I would say check with Oracle, IBM, MS and Sybase. They all have database certs, though not sure how much value they are worth. Database programming/administration is pretty complicated and is not as easy to test as something like basic network administration, which is what most certs seem to test on. Get some experience doing database work. Lots of sebwites offer MySQL/PHP functionality; you can use that to try some basic database work out and I think Oracle is free for home use. Just tell your pal to get some decent books on it and try doing this on their own. If they know a bit of programming and database stuff already, it shouldn't be that hard. |
