i'd think that would mean to clear your browser's history and delete the cookies. that way, your spouse won't see all the porn on your comp!
(i don't mean this directly to you, i mean generally)

| actually, this guy told me that after I had visited his website. He had my IP address and knew what area of the country I am from. Close, but not quite the area.
So, I'm not sure what he meant. Is there a way to block my IP from a site when I surf?
I'm not worried about it, just would like to have that knowledge in my bag of tricks...just in case.

Actually, I also knew you were running I believe Windows 98 with IE 5.5 if my memory servers me correct. I believe it was provided by Kanokla Communications, Inc.
Don't be scared. I was just telling you for future references to protect yourself.

Web proxy will work. Try to look for a nice public one.
Firewall if you have boardband.

| i don't think there's much damage that can be done with just your IP being known. it's knowing what to do with an IP, such as scanning your ports to see which ones are open. a firewall can help. www.zonealarm.com has a free personal firewall that works well. | |

I disagree, there is a lot that can be done by just knowing an ip.
| gr33nd4yg1rl 2002-11-20, 12:52 pm |
| i mean, just knowing the actual address isn't much of a threat, is it? it's what can be done to you once somebody connects to you through your ip using some program. unless you trace it or ping it...or am i wrong? do the numbers themselves give away damaging information? | |

| Well, really, what is the point Ruscorp? What can you do? Port Scan her? DOS attack her IP? Try to hack the machine with the port scan?
Most internet users do not yet have broadband. Therefore, most internet user aren't going to be using a cable/dsl router/switch/NAT/DHCP/"Firewall".
Yes, everyone should at least run some kind of software firewall, such as Zone Alarm.
But, an average user - not a PC builder, not a web master, not a networker, but most average users don't even understand what firewalls and proxy servers are much less actually use one.
IP and IP addresses are used much like an address on a snail mail envelope. There is a destination and a source. Without these two numbers, internet traffic is not possible. Ok, so she could use Network Address Translation (NAT). You'll still have the IP of the outside interface on her NAT box. Or she could use a Proxy server - you'd still have the IP address of the Proxy server.
So, what is the point?
(By the way, if you ever sniffed (captured packets) a web site's traffic from your machine to their webserver, IE has a lovely habit of giving all that info out - OS version, IE version, and sometimes more specific "private" information such as the NetBIOS Machine name - which for a lot of home users would be something like JoesPC. That's how he's seeing this information - not to mention he's going to need the IP address to reply to you).

| sorry to interrupt this riveting conversation, but even if you *do* have briadband, chances are the IP you see in your web logs come from a *router* in between the two boxes, not the actual client machine.
A firewall is always advisable, and is a required device for broadband accounts. I prefer hardware firewalls to software, btw. Or you can use an old box and run Linux and cwall on it -- or was it sea wall, I never quite remember. IPCHAINS and Masquerading can be fun -- in a twisted kind of way I have been hanging out at www.linuxhell.com too long these days...
Using proxies is a good idea. There are also sites like anonymizer.com that can help for online privacy. And when using a proxy, try one that is not located in the US for extra precautions

| Well the think hear is does your ISP provide static or dynamic ip address.
In my case Verizon uses Dynammic IP addresses on my account so covering my IP address is not needed . Every time I login on I get a new IP
|
| that's not entirely true. First DHCP will always attempt to give you the same IP. Second, the IP you get is part of a block that belongs to the ISP. Hackers know those blocks -- www.arin.net will tell you all you need -- and they love to ping sweep those blocks to see who is up... | |

| The best thing you could do is:
1) Get a personal firewall and learn how to configure it. Some good free ones are... Tiny Personal Firewall (www.tinysoftware.com) and Outpost (www.agnitum.com - this one even has it's own api to create your own modules). Just remember, deny everything and allow what you need.
2) Run antivirus software and keep your definitons updated.
3) If you feel the need, run some host based intrusion detection software.
4) To make it a bit harder, upgrade to and learn to administer windows 2000/xp pro. These operating systems were built with greater security than 9.x
If you feel spunky you can even learn to do some baseline statistics collection of your os using automation (a little vb script and wsh) which you can use to monitor resource usage on your machine and notify you if anything is funny.
Although proxies can help hide your ip address from web sites you hit, they are not fool proof and can limit you in some ways (some people scan for and limit/ban people from open proxies).
In my experience most wanna be haxors out there couldn't distinguish a default install of iis from a unix/apache web server so if you take the basic precautions and monitor your computer you are fine for the most part.
| loopbacklady 2002-11-24, 10:03 am |
| Thanks to EVERYBODY for the advice!
I do have Norton's running, but I don't have any firewall protection. I didn't feel the need since I'm usually only on-line a few hours a day. (dial-up)
Maybe I'll check it out, though.
| Juridian 2002-11-24, 10:12 am |
| I highly reccomend it. Even that few hours a day is enough to get scanned and prodded quite a bit by script kiddies and any worms that are out there. | |
| loopbacklady 2002-11-24, 10:15 am |
| Thanks. I'm looking at both those links right now. Can't decide which one to try. Which one is the simplest? Sometimes, simpler is better. I don't need alot of extra stuff. | |

Simpler is not always the best - once you've installed something like Norton Firewall, it's amazing how many "people", (a loose term) that you actually see are trying to ferret around in, what should be, your own private world.

| Juridian 2002-11-24, 10:49 am |

| Why do you sexist men always assume that everyone on here is a man? I know it is a man's field but a user name can be deceiving!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe a woman could have a nickname that is a man's name, eh? | |

I know, I was actually referring to the Enforcer in his comment "well if he's refering to the picture of Ken Whom then it's probably a condiment." His use of the word "he's" says it all. Enforcer, the last I checked, condiments are something you put on your hamburger!
ps ruscorp you are correct in your assumption!

you are quite right about my use of the 'he's' and i do humbly apologise.
the condiment is something you might put on a hamburger and since ken whom, the guy in the picture, is a chef, it tied in rather nicely

| how did this thread get from network security to condiments? you did this, didn't you enforcer! and who is Ken Whom? I missed something there. saw the picture. is that really his name? | |
| Larak 2002-11-26, 12:01 pm |
| You need two things for good basic security.
1) A software firewall - zone alarm and black ice defencer are both excellent products, there may be others
2) A hardware firewall - this can get complicated but an easy way to deal with it is to buy an inexpensive ($80 +-) router and connect through it. This is assuming that you have broadband. The router (most brands) will have web browser interfaces and a default configuration. Find one with a built in 10/100 switch (not a hub!) Eventually you will want to connect more computers to your uplink or to each other. The switch will let you do that.
If you connect via dialup things get more complicated. - A subject for another thread.
| loopbacklady 2002-11-26, 10:28 pm |
| Thanks. I'm going with ZoneAlarm, and yes, afraid I have dial-up. Really BAD dial-up. | |
