so it finally comes out!
my understanding is that great britain is in fact england without ireland attached, and the uk is england + ireland.
??? | |
|
| Very close.
Great Britain is made up of England, Scotland, and Wales where as the United Kingdom is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

| NP.
I had to think of a name for playing Quake so I came up with Tron. I added the extra 'N' because I met someone else using Tron as well. It's stuck since then.

Not too far off, Ireland once was, untill it became a free state.

I was hinting more to the fact that Kate39 had missed out Scotland and wales.

great britain (or the mainland as the irelanders call it) is the bigger of the islands that make up the british isles. or the isles as frank black once called it.

but... i think i'll see a person from such a country post a reply to something that doesn't exist. probabaly the evil enfarcar

| you're mixing up the United Kingdom with the Commonwealth.
as stated before the UK is England,Scotland,Wales (Great Britain) and Northern Ireland.
The commonwealth has the UK plus what countries used to be part of the British Empire. Some countries have left the commonwealth, but also some new ones have joined.
| bearing 2002-11-19, 7:21 am |
| Judging by our beloved England football team anyone would thing the UK and Great Britain comprised totally of England, England, England and England. | |
|
| The governors are the Queen's representatives,as she is head of state,I don't consider them meaningless.
Australia voted to keep the Queen as head of state when they had a referendum in 2000.
I'm sure if the majority of Canadians wanted to be a Republic it would happen.
Regards
Foggy. | |

| If you ask me (and i dont think anyone did!) both the UK and Great Britain are defunct terms used by a gang of legitimised 'bullying' countries trying to appear 'tough' on the world stage.
Take this...I'm Scottish (whoooo!!) and i dont think that the UK (as it says on my passport) is particularly united or great in any way shape or form.
I hate getting dragged into the political machinations of another country (ie England) and getting tarred with their wrongs!!

But then again i may just be hoping that someone will get wound up with this cos i've had the most uneventful day ever

| its actually a bit pitiful that the Scots keep harping on about Bannockburn isn't it? Especially since its just about the only battle that the English didnt completely whip our blue [with the cold!] asses... | |

I remember hearing a Scotsman talking about the thousand songs written about the one win against the English, and the one song about the thousand losses you suffered..
Then again the Battle of Culloden was hardly England V Scotland, as there were plenty of Scottish Clans fighting for the English...

Here you go then....
O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
The Hills are bare now,
And Autumn leaves
lie thick and still,
O'er land that is lost now,
Which those so dearly held,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
Those days are past now,
And in the past
they must remain,
But we can still rise now,
And be the nation again,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
0 Flower of Scotland,
When will we see

That fought and died for,

| As an American, I try to stay out of European politics. My heritage is American Indian, Bastard, Irish (Where's the Beer???), Bastard, French (Snails Rule and English Drool!), and Bastard. Having said that, I must still admit the English have the best beer in the world. (Sue Me!). | |

So why is it Budweiser is one of the biggest selling beers in the UK? ( GB , british Isles , whatever. )
I dunno, advertising i guess.
though while I was there last month I did see amongst the bishops finger , tangle foot and Marsden pedigree ales, bottles of San fransisco's Anchor Steam beer. Praise indeed.

| Nice to know that we're all, despite national heritage and rivalries, united by one thing...BEER!!!
The international peacemaker! the Kofi Annan of liquid refreshments and the Ghandi of cool...but too much of a good thing is, of course, bad! Too much beer turns us to the dark side of the emperor
That's why i have a penchant for Drambui
[from one of the most romantic periods of scottish history, a recipe given to bonnie prince charlie by the mackinnon clan-- "An Dram Budach" meaning 'the drink that satisfies'] but really it just gets you drunk as a fart as well!!

Speak for yourself!
Most of the time Great Britain or Britain is fine if you are just talking about location, as in "I'm taking a trip to Great Britain." If you are talking about something official then you go with United Kingdom or UK, like with the mail.
If you use "England" make sure you are talking about just that specific area, as in "We started out in England. We went to Oxford and Salisbury, and then went up to Edinburgh in Scotland."

My cousin explained to me that it's because most British beers are heavy. If you are in the mood for something lighter, a Bud is as good as anything else. It seems to be either that or a Foster's.
