i have cisco 3500 switch, and i'm trying to do trunking, i configured one VLAN in each switch, and i configured on port 24 a trunk port, but the two vlans are not talking,
do you use a striaght throught cable between the 2 trunking ports or crossover????

youd use a crossover to connect to switches...

make sure the encapsulation is the same (isl or dotq) and the vlan # is the same in both switches.

attach your configs to your next message, that will help troubleshot your issue

i configured both switches, but one pc that is connected to the second switch can ping the switch that is connected to, but the pc that is connected to the 1st switch could not ping the switch1 that is connected to.

i saved the configuration fron the 2nd switch, and erased all the configuration in switch 1, then i paste switch 2's configuration to switch's 1 configuration, (i changed the hostname and some ip addresses) and still it doesn't work

here is my configuration for the second switch
**note, there are extra things in the configuration because the other team is working on something else***

please help

And they will never be able to. You need a layer 3 device to route between VLANs. And having both switches addressed in VLAN1 with different subnets isn't going to work, either. That's what I'm inferring that you have going on here.

Thanks MadChef, but labswitch4(3500) has different ip address and defualt gateway than labswitch5(3500) and i have a document that shows that i have 2 switches.
this is the URL http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/43.html Note: i did not do the 5500 section....(you will know what i'm talking about when you read it)

thanks so much for your reply

and please help me

i think i know what is the problem, connecting 2 switches directly they have to be under the same subnet. switch2 was 192.168.20.2, and switch4 was 192.168.40.2

i think i should have them under the same subnet
is that right????

i fixed it
it was my mistake (as usual) that when i configured the switches, each one of them were in different subnet, so now i did it, and they are working fine, thanks for the hint MadChef, and thanks for everybody
