| I have an older computer that my wife uses at home and She ordered DSL the other day, and I really do not want to buy a new computer just yet... I don't even know who makes the thing the only thing that it says on the front is Pentium IIR inside. It is a 90 mhz processor currently running at 120 mhz, to install the software to get the dsl up and running it need to have 64 MB Ram and currently I have 40 MB any one know where I can get the ram (pre PC100 chip) I also need to do a bios upgrade but have no clue as to what motherboard I have the only thing I see on it is a sticker from Pheonix that says 586PCI PnP MB 139913 currently it has pheonix bios 4.04 any ideas on how to upgrade,, any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks | |

| If you can't identify the manufacturer by checking your PC owner's manual or the system's case or motherboard, you should check your computer screen immediately after the system is switched on (during POST) to see if a manufacturer's copyright notice is displayed.
Here is a link to Phoenix BIOS FAQ. They address the issue of BIOS upgrade and should be able to line you out.

Try and find a manufacturers name and model number on the motherboard. Do a search with this info to try and find more info on your motherboard. Older memory is not as cheap as the new stuff. PNY might be able to help.

Hopefully, this will get you started.

| Somebody at some point in time built this one out of spare parts so there is no manual and very little markings.. where on the motherboard should I look for manafacture info? | |

| It could be anywhere on the board, some have it stamp clearly, look between ISA slot, also some have lable stuck on the side of the first ISA slot you can use a mirror to reflect it if you don't want to remove board out. Also the bottom of the board shouldn't be overlook (stange info is avaiable there)but usualy is on the top.
Reguardless home made or not a book was provided with systemboard ,maybe a CD came with it.???

| If all of the above fails then you could always do it the hard way. Look on the motherboard for the FCC number. It probably starts with FRN-xxxxxxx . If you can find that then go to www.fcc.gov and search the CORES system with the FRN number. It will tell you who registered the board which should be the manufacturer. You can then go to their web site and generally download the manual.
After seeing Walmarts $200 system special first hand I am hard pressed to upgrade anything old. Two students in my class have purchased them in the last two weeks. One kept lindows and one wiped it out and replaced it with win98. Both are statisfied.

| What dsl did you sign up for? As I know sympatico tell software tells you do not meet requirements but there is a way to by pass that. Need to call Bell and ask them how to install the software in a case like that. Have done just don't remember how! | |
