| Lo all,
I have a user that dials in via 56k on a win2k laptop to an internal network (NT4 server) with an exchange server. The exchange server is also the domain controller and the dial in server.
Once the user is dialled in, he CAN ping the IP of the server, and he also CAN ping the netbios name of the exchange/domain controller server in the Command Prompt.
THe problem is when he tries to open his email. Outlook cannot see the server's netbios name and says there is a network problem preventing connection ??? Also, if I go into 'Run' on the win2k laptop and type '\\server' .... it comes back saying it cannot open the share as there is a connection fault ???
any help would be great...
In summary,
-he can ping the server via IP and Netbios
-Outlook does not see the server

| Yeah, plenty, but nothing that could be printed on a good wholesome family forum website like this.
anyway back to the question.
can he browse the rest of the network ok?
can he access the server by using explorer?
can he map a drive to the server?

i remembr making a comment like this in a thread started by factor >g<, only my ideas were about food. i was a bit vague with the fact, though, and he actually thought i was referring to ideas that would solve his image problem at the time.
mmmm, it's approaching 11.15am and time i started thinking about lunch.

| Try downloading ...
h**p://www.student.ipfw.edu/~gottjl01/files/cmtu10017.zip
or
h**p://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html
which is DrTCP
and change your MTU value from what it
is now, to as low as 1324...the higher
the better, but not as high as it will
stop working. A router as 1492 has
no problems, usually. | |

no, no and no
His laptop dials into the 56k modem on the nt4 server fine and dandy. Then I go into Command Prompt on the Win2k laptop.
'Ping 10.0.0.1'

Then I try
'Ping Server'

So, he can connect fine over tcp and netbios (within command promt)
Then, I goto (on the laptop)
Start, Run... \\server
'Server cannot be found' (or an error like that.. says it cannot connect)
So then I try going to Start, Run, \\10.0.0.1
'10.0.0.1 cannot be found'
If I try putting in details into properties of exchange, it cannot resolve them???
I've added a hosts file:
10.0.0.1 server #PRE #DOM:ALPHA
10.0.0.1 "ALPHA \0x1b" #PRE
Just the details in the hosts file are a bit different, but the finished hosts file has all right info in it and right spacing iswell ??? The laptop cannot find the domain?
Anyway, thx kevmetric, I'l give that proggy a shot tommorow

| check the network browsing services/settings | |

| Is DNS and Wins working correctly as if it can reach it with IP address but not when you use the names maybe there is something wrong with one of those? | |

The laptop CAN ping IP and Netbios (name of server)
Its an nt4 server, so Dns isn't really an issue.

| it sounds like the browser servive is not working over then dial up link, i think you need to check settings in there. | |
|
| thx enforcer, I was back on site today and was having a glance of the browser service.
I brought in my laptop (win2k professional), and first set it up on the network with username and email. then disconnected from network and dialled into the nt4 server. It worked, I could access email and network? There must be something going on with the dude's laptop?
