A friend of mine called with a pc problem. I built the pc in 1998 and OS is 98. After having it in storage a year while building a new house, he hooked it up last night. His daughter started to type in Notepad and he ask her to hit print to see if the printer worked. The pc crashed, and when it came up scandisk said there was a bad sector and it was unable to read drive C, abort retry fail?
I ask him to set the defaults in bios, and try to get to drive a. The system locks and doesn't allow to access command line or type anything. Restarts resulted in the same. Is there an erroneous error on the scandisk reporting a bad sector(occured while printing???) that can be correct by reloading after fdisking, or is scandisk that reliable that it is definitely a drive?
Am I correct to try to format, fdisk and reload, before swapping the 60 drive, which I will have to purchase, or is it definitely a drive,OR SOMETHING ELSE? He was not connected to the internet, and had no problems previous. And, No his PC was not around anything magnetic in storage.

to Nitro5q:

Are you able to boot into safe mode? If so, trying running thorough scandisk from there, first. If it finds a bd sector, it will try to repair it. If that doesn't work..then do the format.fdisk, and reload. Run scan disk again and it will overwrite the bad sectors.

I would definitely go with jonhiker's idea of using scandisk to try and fix any bad sectors. Do the full surface scan and the utility will mark the bad sectors of the drive as unusable to the OS.

If you can't boot to safe mode and don't mind losing your data, you could always attempt the scandisk through your Win98 install procedure. It will normally do a scandisk on your hard drive. Good luck.

To Namrak:

Joggle my memory a bit, does the 98 cd do a scandisk before it reloads? I guess that is what you are talking about.

I got him into safe mode over the phone when he called, but like I say, tried a thorough scan, and it ended with a locked up command prompt. Not sure if the disk can be repaired logically, or replaced or bogus error. Could be crossed linked files I assumed at the onset, but until I get the pc I cannot do nothin. I will probably put a boot disk in and fdisk and reload, but still waitin on pc.
Thanks for your help.

Had the same problem on my iE 5.5. I removed everybit of it off the pc and reloaded the program. It should be on your server, so the download wont take an hour and a half like my old 56 k took. Worth a try , could be something else, did he/she do any internet options changing?? I doubt if that would ever be an option anywhere though. Later.

So, I guess from what help I've received, to insert a boot disk and attempt to run the scandisk from the 98 boot disk. It should fix the bad sectors that apparently appeared when the person attempted to print a file. Then I can remove the disk, and 98 should run in normal mode right?
