I've had my certifications now for about 2 years and yet I have not gotten into the IT feild. I keep my skills together by repairing computers on the side, yet, I would love nothing betting than being out in the field, setting up networks and earing the salary that I would be making in the IT field. I'll be getting my degree in Information Techology in 2004, but will that be all for nothing? Why can't I get into the field now so that I can get the experience that I need. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!

what have you been appliying for already?

Certifications on their own don't necessary get you a job you need to get in at the ground level to get experience and to prove yourself.

sounds like things are getting together quite nicely to me. the speed may not be as fast as you would like but it does sound good.

you are repairing computers in your spare time, which is valid experience.

your degree will help too. a lot of jobs in my area require a degree for network administrators. have you time/money to take some mcp exams? even if you do not want to be mcse/mcsa, having your 210 or 270 will look good on your resume.

No, it will not be for nothing. You just need to be presistent. After your degree is in hand, you will have a lot more bargaining power. Actually getting your foot in the door is the hardest part. That will take consistent effort and persistence. Do not give up. You might want to revamp your resume, as they can make a big difference many times. Might want to do some "human networking" to see if anyone knows of any positions that will be open at any place they know of soon. Have you cosidered relocation? Co-operative education (most colleges have programs like this)? It sounds like you are doing fine to me, but I know it can be disheartening at times. The main thing is simply to just not give up. All of us have to play this little game, and no one that I know of actually enjoys it, but it pays off in the long run.

[B]Relocation is out of the question for now since my wife doens't want to move out of the Philadelphia area. I thought about getting my MCP cert next but since I'm getting my degree, I think I can do both at the same time. I applied for almost evey Help Desk entry level position in the Philly area and I guess they don't want to take a chance with me. But I'll keep plugging away til I do. [<B]

During my last semester of college in fall of 2000 I was getting interviews each week and people were contacting me first. I didn't even have any certs then. Since last september I've had 2 job interviews one in fall 2001 No cert then but I was called back because I had things on my resume they were looking for. My other interview back a sveral months now I went in with my degree and cert and still didn't get it. So now I'm doing similar to you pc repair on the side and voluteer work in a community based computer center which is exposing me to a Windows XP pro Win2000 domain environment plus plently of exposure working with all kinds of end users. Plus I got a little contracting work out of the place I'm voluteering at not much but a start. The whole IT field is slow right now so hang in there and keep an eye out, keep positive.

Good Luck
