in win 98, most of the time when you go into task manager and try to 'end task' to close a webpage that isn't responding, just the non-responsive webpage would close leaving the other webpages open.

in win xp, when you end task for the non-responding page, it closes all open pages. stupid sh|t pisses me off!

I've found whatever OS i'm in, closing the problem IE page closes them all down. also the same with netscape, except when i use two different versions of netscape. (4.77 and 7).

This is not the perfect solution but may be a good workaround if this is driving you nuts.

Open the registry editor.
Navigate to HKCU | Software | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Explorer

Add a new string called "BrowseNewProcess" and set its value to "yes".

Basically, this would open each instance of IE in its own seperate process/memory area. So if one instance of IE is acting up, the others won't be affected.

The downside...this registry hack uses more memory because each instance of IE is in its own memory space. But if you have a good deal of memory in your system, it's a possible solution.

I am not responsible for any such damage that may occur directly or indirectly as a result of your applying these changes. Don't try it if you are not sure. Use at your own risk.

Here's a dumb question. If this Reg entry is not there, and you are adding it, that means that it is not part of the design of the OS. How, therefore, does Windows know what you mean when you add these things? This has always had me perplexed about the Reg. I can understand when you change the values of existing strings, but how does the OS understand these things?
