Author Where to begin?

I am a former police officer who left the agency to start a career in computers. I am 25 years old and am somewhat familiar with computers and how they operate. I was wondering if there are any patient souls out there who wouldn't mind pointing a humble beginner in the right direction as far as beginning, the basics and what certifications to start with. I am interesting in everything from networking, web site production and hardware/software support. I have taken one class at a community college in digital electronics a few years ago.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

HI, like almost like you I have been a Paramedic/firefighter for a long time. I am switching to networking. I really count on what type of learning do you like. If you understand computers a little a self pace classes that teaches from basic computer, for example Word, Excel, Access all the way to A+, would be good for you. However, if you like the classrooms try to fine a college that teaches the same as above.

the route suggested by many is comptia a+ then comptia network+. then decide if you prefer to administer networks, in which case you follow mcse track from microsoft (achieving mcsa on the way as the a+ and network+ will mean you have to do one exam less to achieve a fancy title), or cisco track which involves network hardware and routers in particular.

good luck.

I would start with a little investigating into the different fields and see what interests you the most. Go to the library and read up on the different subjects you mentioned. Web production is much different from networking & tech support. A class at your locall cc or extension univeristy would be a good investment. Get a book or two(try a used book store) on HTML/Dreamweaver or A+/Networking and see how it fits.

Good Luck!

though if you want to get into webdesign, i would suggestlearning about databases and how the enduser (potential customers or whatever) can react with them (many suggest php and mysql).

in my opinion people who just design pages with text and pictures will not be required as it will soon be realised by companies that secretaries can design decent webpages in word as easily as other types of document.

Always start at the beginning...so start on what you want the most...but start at teh beginnign of it. If you wanna be in networks, start with network plus then advance up to cisco or whatever you wanna do.
