Is there anyone here that still repairs PC boards?
At work I still do. We have very expensive custom PLC base computer system but I am limit to about one hour on some of them.At home I will spend some time on a board before replacing it.Like I will replace keyboard fuses, keyboard and port buffers, sockets plugs …
If you do what is some of the test stuff you have.
My list at home
2 fluke meters
2 Tektronix oscilloscopes
1 capacitor meter
1 light meter
1 logic probe
1 PC or stand alone EPROM programmer
1 cat5 cable tester

At work
About the same plus
ESD strap,cable and mat tester
1 hypot tester
High voltage probe

One other reason I find myself repairing a board instead of just replacing it is some of the older PC boards are not standard and are very hard to find. Some customers Do not want to replace there PC.

I must be a geek I still make PC boards

I see, so you take care with ESD at work, but you don't at home. Hmmmmmm

where i've worked, either the pc was in warranty and the manufacturer replaced the board or the pc was considered obsolete so we replaced with one that had been decommissioned and stripped the old pc of anything valuable before consigning to the IT room in the sky.

Having said that, did get my soldering iron out for a printer once, an old HP 4MV where a spring that brought the output rollers to the paper had broken it's little catch off, we used the iron to make a small hole in the main plastic part and that worked quite nicely. When it happened on another we were lucky to have a small drill handy, so didn't need the iron.

I do use care with ESD at home but just use my meter to test it out.

Boy the one thing I am going to miss when I change jobs is the challenge of repairing new and used PC boards. Nothing like trying to repair a four layer board. (Inner trace opens and shorts , wrong and bad parts , solder shorts , unsolder pins , new parts from a different vender that should work but don’t . …)
But component level tech are a dying breed an that is one of the reasons I am studying.
On the plus side I do love working with computers.I still turn a hobby into a career

You owe me a cup of coffee.

-------------
A man walked into a restaurant and seated himself. Soon, the waitress came over to take his order.". . .and to drink?" she asked. The man said he would like coffee. The waitress promptly returned with a cup of coffee, but spilled it on the man's lap when she stopped at the table.

"Oh my God; I am so sorry!" "That's OK," the man said, sopping up the puddle on his pants with his a napkin - "but tell me, is this regular or decaf?"

"Regular," she replied.

"Oh great, now this thing is going to be up all night

I once blew the dust off a board with canned air.

Long ago, I did repair work with electronic typewriters and word processors. I can still do precision soldering, but there's just not much call for it in the PC world.
