what does the north bridge and south bridge mean when I'm reading specs on a motherboard?

The north & south bridge are two chips connected by the PCI bus, which are the two parts of the motherboard chipset. The one nearest the CPU is the north bridge which manages tranfers between the cpu and the AGP bus & the memory etc.

The south bridge is located on the other side of the motherboard and controls the isa bus, keyboard/mouse, usb, hd etc.
