Window 2000 Server Problem

| Hi all,
I have a weird case here. Just wondering if anyone of you here had a same experience and would be able to help.
I have 3 Windows 2000 Servers (with Service Pack 1 installed). Server1 and Server2 are setup as Domain Controllers. Server3 is just a member server. Other software installed on the servers are:
Server1 – MS Access, MS Visual C++, JDE OneWorld.
Server2 – Cognos
Server3 – Websphere
The problem is, after the servers are left idle for around one week, Server1 and Server2 started acting weird. When the Start button is being pushed, the usual menu won’t come up. When I right-clicked My Computer and choose Manage, Error message came out stating MMC error. However I could still browse the content by double clicking My Computer. There are no error or whatsoever being logged in the Event Logs. Also, during this period of time, users can still log on to the Domain or to JDE. After a reboot of the servers, everything was back to normal.
I have another branch with exactly the same specifications except that the servers here are installed with Service Pack 2. Same thing happened to the two servers which are Domain Controller.
First I thought it’s something to do with the Active Directory. But then I have yet another server which is not a Domain Controller having the same problem. This server is installed with Windows 2000 Server (SP2), MS SQL Server 7, JDE OneWorld, and MS Visual C++.
I’m cracking my head to figure out. Anyone here have any idea? | |

| I sometimes get this, especially with NT servers. It happens usually when the server is left on for a considerable amount of time. My attitude towards it is that every server needs a reboot, at least once a week, so it can restart/refresh its services, especially if its a busy server.
Dont ask me why, I think its just the operating system getting confused or being overworked ....
HOw fast are the servers ? are they less than a year old ? I mostly get this problem on 2 or more years old machines. | |

| Hi Ando,
Thanks for your reply. Those servers are very new servers. They are very fast servers too. They are Petium III 1GHz with 512MB RAM. And they were not really overloaded as your mentioned.
You see, we had a long holiday season end of last year. And during those time, the servers were left idle doing nothing at all. No users were in the office so no way they were overloaded.
When we came back from the holiday, we discovered that the servers were in weird condition. Surprisingly, users can still log on to the domain and to JDE.
If it's cause by heavy workload, I can understand. But now it's not. I'm lost.

| its unusual to see the amount of your servers having the same problem at the same time 
The servers have the same hardware I'm guessing, maybe it aint such a bad idea to do a diagnostic or 2 on the hardware .... see if its 100% compatale with Windows 2000.

| I agree, it's time for a hardware diagnostic.
I don't think it's just NT, although I have seen NT mysteriously stop certain services or just decide to take a vacation. My NT server has been up for over a year without rebooting... eerie, I know, but I guess it means NT doesn't always have to be rebooted  |
